Redray 4K Cinema Player

Redray 4K Cinema Player from Red Digital Cameras was an early attempt to bring 4K movies at home in 2012. $1,450 for the player with 1TB storage which would pair with the Odemax digital store for downloading 4K movies. From what I can see Odemax didn’t have any studio support therefore had a lackluster catalog of films. Both the player and services are long discontinued now.

On the surface this is a powerful hardware (for its time) from a very reputable company for an extremely competitive price for a 4K player when an average BD player was $600, yet it failed. Maybe it was too early? Too ahead of its time for the mass market? Surely, the lack of content and an ecosystem were the biggest contributors to its demise.

Exactly right. The difficulty for any of these types of startups is the metaphoric adjective "chicken / egg" question. It's nearly impossible to generate a user base without content, and very difficult to get access to the content you need without an active user base.
