Preventative Vault Maintenance

Should vault owners be doing preventative maintenance? Should I open my vault and clean the rollers and blow out the carousel occasionally? Or is it better just to wait until there is a problem? I want to preserve the life of my vault but I don't want to cause a premature failure. I have already had the vault fail once before so I am a little gun-shy.

Waiting is fine. While it is true that the rollers perform better when clean, if it's working there's no reason to open the case and clean the rollers. Vaults that have been used, or are being used, as "bulk loaders" (adding and removing discs on a regular basis), as opposed to loading 320 discs and leaving it alone, will likely need the rollers cleaned more often. Obviously if the Vault's out of warranty, then removing the case and cleaning the rollers is not a problem. There are instructions for cleaning the rollers that I believe I posted to the forum a while ago.

Only suggestion I have is to make sure your discs are clean and dust-free before inserting each one. The rollers have a tackiness to them to help grasp discs when pulling them into the front slot and the optical drive. If the discs have dirt/dust on them, that will often transfer to the rollers. It is typically when there is too much build up that the rollers struggle to grasp discs, especially those w/the smoothest surface (e.g., discs with a shiny label or no label at all like a double sided disc).
