Poorly Authored DVDs - How do you know the status?

Steven

Well-known member
Hi,

I just tried to import Seven Pounds, and it ran for a few hours, then indicated that it wouldn't import. So I looked on Kaleidescape's web page and see that it is listed under the poorly authored DVD section.

If it is there, does it mean that Kaleidescape is working on it? I'm wondering if there is a way to determine the status of a disk.

Thanks, Steven

Elaboration

Hi,

Perhaps I could elaborate on my question....

How do I know if:

1. An import issue has been reported?

2. If a DVD is known not to import? And if so, when it is fixed?

3. If a DVD is poorly authored and will import, but will be one of those 'overnighter' imports?

Thanks, Steven

Yes, but Steven's got a good point. That list at Kaleidescape is not always up-to-date with newly discovered import issues. There's no good way to see if something's been reported to K but not yet diagnosed or verified by them. I suppose someone here :D could volunteer to maintain such a list, much like James is maintaining the current and past list of hardware over in the Hardware forum.

Actually, whenever any owner reports a disk import problem here on the forum, I immediately contact K to insure they know about the issue, so they are being notified.

On a separate note, K is usually (but not always) aware of the problem by the time they hear from me. Interestingly, they also have the ability to see in the logs (and I believe are automatically notified) when there is a failure to import. I know that on at least two occasions when I called to report the import problem they not only already knew about the problem, BUT they also knew how many owners had attempted the import and failed!!

Any DVD with a significant number of failed imports (from different owners) gets more attention, which is logical when considering it impacts more owners. They do however work on all DVD's at some point, and they have been getting faster.

BTW, I had no problem importing Seven Pounds.

Jim

Thats how they know. And they allocate resources depending on how many import problems they see on a specific DVD.
