Newbie Questions (2)

Could anyone advise me on the process of cataloguing of DVDs and BRs. I understand that there are a few rare machines still able to catalogue the Stratos S and possibly the Stratos C. How does that effect the hardware/Account interface and what is “Grandfathering?” I read a few old comments more than 2-3 years old, but its not immediately clear. What is the most cost-effective solution?

As an extension to that question, what is likely to happen if you catalogue a DVD title that is not available in the UK store? Is it a no-show or readily upgradeable?
Any help appreciated.

Simply put, "Cataloging" is the process used to notify the Kaleidescape Store that you own certain titles on physical disc. This notification allows the Store to present any Digital Offers available for that specific title, including any resolution upgrades (SD > HD > UHD/HDR). The specific offers will appear in the Digital offers section of your Store account.

There are several options available to catalog your discs, depending on the equipment you own. Anyone owning a "Premiere" system, that also has a Store account, is cataloged automatically because the Store can see the disc based content that was previously added to their systems.

Anyone owning a Strato/Terra system, that also owns content on physical discs, must use an additional component if they want to Catalog those discs to receive Digital offers from the Store. That can be done by using an Alto Player, or a Disc Vault, that is added to their Strato System.
They can also Catalog their discs by adding a Premiere component (i.e. Cinema One 2nd Gen) to their Store account as a separate system. Any discs added to the Cinema One are Cataloged to their Store account. NOTE: if you remove the Cinema One from the Store account (i.e Deregister), you will lose any titles you Cataloged through the Cinema One that have not been converted through a Digital Offer. Once converted (purchased) through a Digital Offer, they will remain in your Store account.

You only receive Digital offers based on the content available in the Store, so I assume you would only receive DO's based on UK Store content, regardless of the discs you Catalog.

"Grandfathering" applies to Premiere systems, not Strato/Terra systems, and refers to the ability of Premiere servers to accept CSS-protected DVD's. Here is the explanation from K:

"An agreement with the DVD Copy Control Association states systems sold by Kaleidescape on or after November 30, 2014 will not be able to import CSS-protected DVDs. However, systems may catalog CSS-protected DVDs and those in Store supported territories may take advantage of Kaleidescape’s Disc-to-Digital offers to download electronic versions of the same movies and achieve the same disc-free Kaleidescape experience.

Systems sold by Kaleidescape before November 30, 2014 will still be able to import CSS-protected DVDs.

Systems sold by Kaleidescape on or after November 30, 2014 will continue to be able to play a DVD directly from the physical disc, which provides all of the playback advantages of imported content, including start of playback at the beginning of the feature, or jumping to a favorite scene or song."

And here is some info on Cataloging:

HOW DO I CATALOG A MOVIE OR TV SERIES?

Cataloging is a feature of kOS 6.0.0 or later, and may be able to be performed from a player with an optical drive, a disc server or a disc vault depending on the capabilities of your system.

NOTE: The behavior described in this article applies to systems purchased from Kaleidescape after November 30th, 2014, unless otherwise noted.

Strato Systems

Any Blu-ray disc or DVD can be cataloged from Kaleidescape Alto or a Kaleidescape Disc Server. Strato systems do not import discs.

Cataloging from Kaleidescape Alto

Insert a Blu-ray disc or DVD into the slot of Kaleidescape Alto, and then press the Catalog button.

Once identified, the movie is cataloged and added to your library where it appears alongside titles downloaded from the Kaleidescape Movie Store.

A disc in the slot of a player can also be cataloged from the on-screen user interface without playing it. Insert a Blu-ray disc or DVD and wait for the Disc in Player screen to appear (do not press the Catalog button).

Select Catalog DVD (or Catalog Blu-ray disc), and the movie is cataloged and added to your library where it appears along side titles downloaded from the Kaleidescape Movie Store.

Cataloging from a Kaleidescape Disc Server

When a Blu-ray disc or DVD is inserted into a Kaleidescape Disc Server, the movie is automatically cataloged and added to your library where it appears along side titles downloaded from the Kaleidescape Movie Store.

Premiere Systems and Cinema One

Depending on the capabilities of your system, Blu-ray discs and DVDs can be cataloged from a player with in an optical drive or a disc vault so that they can appear in the on-screen user interface, just like content downloaded from the Kaleidescape Movie Store or imported from disc. The ability to catalog discs depends on the type of media, the date of purchase of the system from Kaleidescape, whether a disc vault is present in the system, and whether the amended service agreement to enable downloads of Disney content from the Kaleidescape Movie Store has been accepted (in territories where the Movie Store is supported).

Cataloging from a player

Insert a disc into the tray, or slot of a player, and then press the Catalog/Import button.

If the disc is a Blu-ray disc, it is cataloged if your system does not include a disc vault. If your system includes a disc vault, the Blu-ray disc is imported. If the disc is a CSS-protected DVD, it is cataloged. If your system was purchased from Kaleidescape before November 30th, 2014, all Blu-ray discs and DVDs (whether protected or not) are imported.

Regardless of the purchase date, if the amended service agreement to enable downloads of Disney content from the Kaleidescape Movie Store has been accepted, your system no longer supports the import of Disney Blu-ray discs and DVDs. A Disney Blu-ray disc or DVD inserted into a player is cataloged.

A disc in the tray, or slot of a player can also be cataloged from the on-screen user interface without playing or importing it. After the disc is inserted, wait a moment for the Disc in Player screen to appear (do not press the Catalog/Import button).

Select Catalog Blu-ray disc (or Catalog DVD). If your system was purchased from Kaleidescape before November 30th, 2014, only Blu-ray discs can be cataloged from the tray or slot of a player in this manner (in systems that do not contain a disc vault).

Cataloging from a disc vault

When a Blu-ray disc is inserted into a disc vault it is automatically imported. When a CSS-protected DVD is inserted into a disc vault, it is automatically cataloged. If your system was purchased from Kaleidescape before November 30th, 2014, all Blu-ray discs and all DVDs (whether protected or not) are imported.

Regardless of the purchase date, if the amended service agreement to enable downloads of Disney content from the Kaleidescape Movie Store has been accepted, your system no longer supports the import of Disney Blu-ray discs and DVDs. Any Disney Blu-ray disc or DVD inserted into a disc vault is cataloged.

Have fun reading, hopefully the above answers your questions.

NOTE: if you remove the Cinema One from the Store account (i.e Deregister), you will lose any titles you Cataloged through the Cinema One that have not been converted through a Digital Offer. Once converted (purchased) through a Digital Offer, they will remain in your Store account.
Is this still the case, since K moved to the perma-presence model for cataloging?

I'll check. Thanks T! (It was about 3 months ago that an owner lost some cataloged titles when he removed a borrowed C1).

Jim

That should no longer be the case. Now, once you've cataloged a movie and the inventory is uploaded to the store (which happens within minutes assuming connections are normal), the store will remember even if you delete the movie, remove the system from your account, etc.
