Managed Copy Demo Video from CEDIA - note: not Kaleidescape

So here is the first demo I've seen for MC:

http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/10/video-frist-working-blu-ray-managed-copy-demo/#continued

Notice one little point I hadn't seen mentioned before at about 50 seconds into the video:

"....the only thing it's allowed to copy is the movie, it's not allowed to copy all the other supplementals...it only does bit for bit for the movie itself....we had all 5 studio heads here this morning look at this and they confirmed it"

Here we go, getting screwed right out of the gate with MC....

Good point. I get the sense even the studios wants to bypass this disc based system and go straight to downloads.

Especially since the new iTunes Extras includes additional content as does the newly announced "Virtual DVD" service that Microsoft is involved with over in the UK:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-10347458-75.html

If you are being asked to pay extra for the privilege of ripping AND downloadable content is now starting to offer extras, why in the world would you limit the rips to the movie only? The studios are beyond ridiculous.

I don't disagree, but maybe it's because we still have limited infrastucture and to get ALL the content transferred, versus just the movie, takes up additional space/time. As it is, we may be being led to believe downloads for the masses is just around the corner (especially by manufactures of components aimed at downloads), but more work and investment (read $) needs to go into infrastructure/bandwidth to make that happen in a big way.

Regarding physical disks, a recent conversation I had with a Sony exec I've know for 30 years indicates Sony is not about to give up on physical disks anytime soon. Too many players sold and being sold. They are also aware of the infrastructure requirements needed to bring downloads to the masses. He did however see downloads as the "eventual" norm for content delivery, but he declined to give me a time frame. Of course that thinking could change based on what competitor's do going forward.

But by that logic shouldn't we expect transfers of extras from the disc rather than via download? The bottleneck is broadband, not from your optical drive straight to an HDD. It seems completely backwards that we'd start to see extras on downloads and not from BR via MMC. Why cripple BR's appeal if you are willing to offer the extras via download? Sure, there may be disagreements amongst the studios such that only some studios will allow for extras in downloads while other will not. But an across the board ban on extras ripping for all BR discs? That's ludicrous.

Agree Jeff, sorry, I misread your post!

No problem at all. By the way, I sent a Tweet to Ben Drawbaugh from Engadget HD asking about the comments made by the Pioneer rep in the video. His response:

"Actually the AACS-LA told me it was up to the studio, so I assume he meant that is what Disney told him."

Now, since the Pioneer guy made it a point to say that all 5 studio heads had confirmed the limitation, it raises concerns about who would and would not be offering the ability to rip the extras via MMC. We'll see what they implement, but the very existence of that as a limitation raises red flags. I sure hope they at least do it across the board for all titles in their respective catalogs. Otherwise, title by title limitations or abilities will be a huge mess. Also, something tells me they won't be advertising that on the back of the box either - you'll have to buy it and take it home yourself to find out what you can and can't do. Heck, even if it was just all titles from a particular studio, it's still a mess.

I can see on the one hand how despite calmoring for extras, there is the general perception that most don't really care about watching them, certainly not more than once anyway (so why bother copying it off-disk?) Given "it goes right into the movie" is one of K's first feature points, granted mostly in regard to pre-video promos, it's not hard to see this point.

And on the other... wow. Are the studios trying to subtley hint around that they only passed MC to get it off the docket, and basically don't really care what we do until they get streaming HD formailzed, as long as it does not include sharing with our closest million friends or so?
