looking to buy a Kaleidescape system need help

Hello all,

Ill be building a new house soon and was thinking of buying a Kaleidescape system. Was about to order the mini system a few days ago just to have the feel of it then upgrade to the full system when the house gets build. but i just found out from reading the FAQ's on the website that we cant load the system with movies if they are not ripped on the player itself?

problem is i have been ripping all our DVD's on a home media server that we are running. we just upgraded to 2x DroboPro with 16x1tb drives.

so now we will have to re do this all ripping again? is there any way around that? all the rips are in videoTS folders basically Full DVD rips.

Other Question is how about personal Videos ? we also copied ALOT of VHS/ Hi8/MiniDV videos to our server. How would we be able to copy those on Kaleidescape?

Thanks so much all for your time and help!

Unfortunately that is the way the K works. In order to import movies you need to use one of the readers. There is a Speed Reader available that can help with the process or there are firms who can load your data but you will need to have the physical DVD's regardless of the method you use. To import your family videos you will need to burn a DVD and then import with that.

Thanks so much for your prompt reply! hmm thats gonna be a big problem. not with the movies but with the family videos..

hi zbug, im also thinking of investing big in k, prob 2x3u servers with all discs, it amuses me that the film companies go to such lenghts to protect their copyright too....... but i do respect the underlying manners of how i read kscape and i suggest you persevere with your current direction, having formally interveiwed amx in london and not impressed with the uk arrangment unfortunately, so goodluck with your build and fit project and respect for your level of sugestion.

Thank you so much for your reply and support :) im so glad i joined this forum :) everyone seems nice and professional :)

thanks !

I had a 16 drive home built server years ago before I got a Kaleidescape and had to re-rip my whole collection but it really was worth it to me. I ripped most of my collection before I got a bulk loader and wouldn't want to single load films for an initial load ever again unless it was a really small collection.

I would recommend getting some bulk loading help.

exactly the thought i have, just buy the speedreader and be done with it, with large collections ......... it may be possible to borrow 1 if you find a really helpful dealer it seems ........

thank you so much all for your kind replies. problem is i live in Kuwait and there is no dealer here :) i would have became a dealer if i could have afforded it :)

lets see if i can pull some investors :)

You're going to become a dealer just to buy a Kaleidescape? There are plenty of dealers who can service you in Kuwait, even some who can loan you a speed loader.

hello again zbug, i believe ur in the right direction but maybe you need to think outside the box a little as to the technology your getting into, i enjoy the journey as much as the result for example and can take years to refine an idea, i find the people on here top class and respectfully honest, manners and attitude mean alot to me, some of the technical questions and responses are way above my awareness so 1 can go as deep as 1 likes and youd not be alone, enjoy the journey zbug. andy

If you have family videos, give Kaliedescape a call and ask the if they could help you out. If its not copyrighted material they *might* be able to take a hard drive you send them and load it on to the Kalidedescape hard drives youd be using.

Seems easier to just put your home videos onto DVD and load them normally.

I would agree but if you have special edits etc that you are afraid to break or in the case that perhaps you have things in MPEG2 HD....

A while ago I was speaking with a technician and they mentioned some of the HD MPEG2 streams didn't work so well depending on what video editing system was used to create it. I use Final Cut Pro and was told that one had no issues. Perhaps such issues are not a problem anymore but generally if you are on the front edge of technology, you can find all the compatibility issues that later on will be worked out. It would suck if that happens to your family videos but probably not an issue unless they were made way back and have some quirk in the codec. Just a random thought...

Yep. I agree. I have my videos in HD and on BR. I also downconvert them to DVD- thats my way of doing it.
