Kserver-5000 Power supply & Ram

Good morning Forum,

Recently my server would not power up and likely the power supply. It was interesting to see that it was a Cooler Master 600W power supply inside. I've been looking at different options and brands. I have been eyeing up BeQuiet Dark Power 750W. Does anyone have any recommendations? I built my pc with a BeQuiet and they are so quiet.

I also noticed that the motherboard has two slots for Ram. Has anyone ever ever tried sticking another stick of memory in it?

Cheers,

Casey

I’ve added RAM to my 3U and 1Us. It makes the webpage interface faster (especially if you have multiple servers linked together). Stock I believe is one 512MB stick. I believe you can max out at 2X 1GB stick. I also upgraded the CPU to the fastest Intel variant of that generation, which also marginally helps with the webpage interface. I don’t perceive any difference when using the machines at the TV interface level.

Very cool. I’m a computer guy and just thought it was interesting. I have it apart to see what I can do with the power supply anyways.
Thanks for the information.

My 3U is a bit on on the slow side accessing the webpage interface. Especially when I import BDs or download from store. It's totally inaccessible until it's finished.

I have two servers but I only use one of them. The one I use now the sn begins with 0000 and my backup begins with 0103. (It could be a smart move to switch to the newer one to start with)

Do you remember the spec of the RAM you used and what version of 3U server do you upgraded?

I have extensively documented the 3U server and hardware components.

I am afraid none of the stock PC power supplies offer enough amps for the HDD plate daughter board. They might do fine if you only have a handful of HDDs but if it is fully populated with 14 drives, that power supply will overwork. None of the stock PC supplies come with the correct socket and wiring configuration either.

Upgrading RAM surely helps the 3U. I went a step further and upgraded the CPU too. My downloads are about 5% faster with the faster CPU. RAM upgrade made the interface snappier.

Before swapping things, reseat RAM and check the CMOS battery. Also, try powering on without RAM installed.

Faulty RAM will stop the board from attempting to post which may seen like no sign of power. If RAM is bad but everything else check fine, without RAM installed, the board will attempt to post (show signs of life) but continuously beep (this board may not beep. I don’t remember seeing a buzzer installed).

Thank you. That was the thread I was searching for. I remember reading it but couldn't find it. Bookmarked the post this time so I find when it's time to open them up.

This is the link to where I ordered my RAM but it seems they are out of stock now. They don’t make this type RAM anymore. I doubt they will restock again. Just copy the model number and try to source it elsewhere. Kingston and Crucial make inexpensive and reliable RAM too. You can try those. The 3U server can take 2 of these for a total of 2GB RAM though I doubt you will see a real world difference between 1GB and 2GB. Feel free to reach out in private if you have any questions, I would be happy to help.
