K Delay!

Has anyone else experienced backorder issues? I ordered my Premiere system in late December but likely won't receive everything until early April. Is this common? K claims it is not but due to increased demand, new US manufacturing locations and China shipping issues have caused the delay.

Also do all new system purchases include free K store movie downloads?

Ben,

Product coming from China enters through one of the 27 US ports on the West Coast, with the Kaleidescape gear likely coming in through the port of Oakland or Long Beach.

About 9 months ago, the longshoreman's union contract expired and during negotiations, throughput at the port continued to get worse and worse, with a severe backlog of shipping resulting in a port congestion that is the maritime equivalent of the LA freeway system during rush hour with an accident cutting the highway from 4 lanes to 1. That port situation has finally been rectified, but like a busy freeway that still has traffic backed up long after the wreck is cleared, it will take many months to get through the backlog of materials that need to be brought through the ports.

As the port contract is 10 years, I don't expect this to become a problem again for about a decade. While the situation isn't common for Kaleidescape, it is common for electronics in general right now and it took a while longer to get my last surround processor for the exact same reason. While it sucks, it could be worse. There were people (friends of mine actually) packing citrus that could not export their products and they certainly don't have the shelf life that electronics have.

There are several reasons K experienced a delay in shipping components. First, demand DID significantly increase just before the Nov. 30th DVD cutoff date. Although they did anticipate an increase, the actual increase was unexpected and created a large backlog on all Server orders. In addition to the backlog, K made a change to the manufacturing process that included a change in manufacturers (K designs all components, and has a contract manufacturer). It took much longer than K expected for this new manufacturer to get up to speed (single biggest reason for the delay). All of this was happening at the same time K was releasing a new product, the Alto.

In the history of the company there has never been the length of delay seen recently because of the above factors. The good news is K is quickly catching up and should be back to normal delivery times on most, if not all, components very soon.

Thanks to everyone waiting for their orders, your patience is very much appreciated by K (per K's CEO's comments).
