Got a System- now to get it setup! :)

I finally got my hands on a system. It's a used one from the original 100mb server spec, but it sure is cool! :)

I am having a problem, however- the system has not phoned home for over 850 days and I cannot login to it to change its network settings to DHCP so it can update itself. I have tried everything. Does anyone have a recommendation for someone that can take a look at it in the orange county area? I think it is just set to a static ip, but I don't have the computer network knowledge to change it..

Thanks for any suggestions.

Do you have a router that will give you a web interface? If you do you can go to the DHCP client list and see where the "KServer" is.

Ok I've got an airport extreme, does anyone know If this is a bad router for a kaliedescape?

I tried that but I cannot get anything to display in the terminal window or any feedback whatsoever in that window. I used a USB-serial cable and opened the connection but got nothing.

Make sure you are using a crossed cable to communicate with a server, a straight cable won't work....you should be able to capture a server boot log as well and that will tell you what IP the server has been set to.

I think it should work with an Airport Extreme- I use mine as wireless access points and not as routers. brodricj are you saying he should use a patch cable?

Open the web interface for the airport extreme and under Local network>DHCP clients have a look for a device labelled ks-00000000(last 4 digits will be the serial number of the server). If it's not listed then the server is not getting an IP from the router, or it's been set to static outside the DHCP range.

No, I'm talking about communicating with the server over its serial interface when all else fails. For that you need a crossed serial cable, otherwise known as a "null modem" cable. A straight cable won't work....

My PC has 8 serial ports, I find them very useful. Each of my Kaleidescape servers is permanently attached to the PC via serial null modem cable for capturing boot log files whenever needed. The other serial ports look after software updates for my Lumagen Video processors, configuring my CBUS home automation system and other stuff...I'd be lost without that MOXA 8-port serial card on the PC!!

You are way more tweaky than I. I have a mac setup but I have a pc laptop with a usb-serial convertor for when I need to do something with my lumagen or meridian gear.
