DV700 vs M700 with Strato Player

From what I can gather, the Strato Player can utilize a DV700 to store/play/import Blu-Ray media.

Does it also have the ability to use an M700?

Very interested in 4k content, but nervous about the Kscape store closing and want a "plan B"

Thanks!

Hi crizz,

First of all, let's be clear: Strato is part of Kaleidescape's Encore product line. Encore systems do not import any disc media to hard disk. The only movies stored on the hard drives of Encore players or servers are from the Movie Store.

What Encore systems do with the DV700 is to "catalog" discs -- the discs show up in the onscreen display, and if you go to play one, the DV700 loads the disc into its optical drive and sends the digital bits over the network to the player for playback. It typically takes 20-40 seconds to load a disc, depending upon whether a disc was already in the drive, etc.

It's very important to note that while Alto players behave as I've described above today, Strato's support for the DV700 is not yet finished. This is what Kaleidescape engineering was working on at the time that work stopped and staff were laid off. Hopefully this work will be able to resume and the feature will be completed, but right now, Strato cannot play any optical discs at all.

Finally, with respect to the M700, yes, an M700 will work in an Encore system. The built-in player will be disabled, and the M700 will act just like a DV700.

As an owner of an Alto, let me add that only two carousels can be associated with an Alto. Both Disc Vaults and Disc Servers work very well (I have one of each), but, when I attached a second Disc Server, it was not recognized by the Alto; likewise, when I reconfigured my system with two Disc Servers, the Alto did not recognize the Disc Vault.

Essentially, an Alto-based system can handle a maximum of 640 physical discs and up to approximately 200 downloaded Blu-ray movies.

Will the Cinema one also interface with a DV/M700?

Will the Cinema one download from the Kscape store?

Thanks!

An Alto based system can handle much more than 200 downloaded Blu-ray movies. The Terra Server works with the Alto, which at the full 24TB can hold 600 downloaded Blu-rays.

Yes and yes. Current limit is two cinema one's in a system, and essentially one Dv/m700 (two c1s can't store 320 Blu-ray discs much less 640).

Thanks for all the answers.

Last question - Can an M700 function as a stand alone system? In other words - does it require a Kserver/C1/Alto to work or can it be used as a simple Blu-Ray changer/player with the K-scape on screen interface?

No the M700 must have a Kserver 1U,3U,5U,k120,Cinema 1 or an Alto to work.
If you use a Kserver 1U,3U,5U or K120 the M class player will work fine.
If you use an Cinema 1 or an Alto it will just work as a disc server the M class player will not work.

Presently, no. We have previously announced our intent to develop a feature to allow playback of content from Premiere servers to the new Encore line systems. Here's a document with more information. At this time, there is no announced timeframe for this feature, partly because it depends upon adding support for Blu-ray disc playback to Strato.
