Blu-ray Disc Rot?

Have had a couple discs in my M700 become unreadable by the vault (and an M500 player) over the past 6 months or so. Discs are super clean and have never been handled other than to insert them into the vault. No amount of cleaning these discs makes any difference.

This week as well, the M700 ejected 10 discs as unreadable. Cleaned each one very carefully - in the end 1 of the 10 would not read period. Again, all discs were brand new when inserted into the vault. A couple of them were purchased less than 8 months ago. Never been handled other than to insert into the vault. All discs imported with no issue when originally inserted. All discs played back fine - until they became unreadable in the vault and then of course the system will not play them as the disc is not present....

Read up a bit on "disc rot" - seems to be something that can occur - although not 100% clear it is an actual thing.

Has anyone else had issue with discs in your vault suddenly becoming unreadable?

Yes. I happened to me a couple of years ago. It's not the discs. It's a problem with the vault itself. The rollers get dirty and need to be cleaned. Relativity easy albeit tedious. Email K support and they will send instructions.

Not to worry. Your discs will play again!

Thanks - that is likely part of it for some of the discs. And I certainly will get the instructions and clean the rollers.

But I still have 2 discs that no matter how much cleaning is done - they will not play in any player or BD computer drive. The discs are no longer any good.

Hum. For that to happen usually you have to play a disc quite often, expose it to extreme temperatures, or physically damage it. I haven't received a bad copy from a studio in quite a long time (really can't remember, and not a blu-ray).

Good luck then. I don't know what else it could be

Yes I agree but in this case these discs are in the vault - so not really played at all. The two that have totally failed are older - maybe 6 years old. Vault is in a climate controlled dedicated equipment room. Discs appear to be 100% clean scratch free. Strange.

When I had to remove the cover of my M700 there isn't even a spec of dust inside it, yet in my smoke-free home the rollers both to feed discs into the vault and the from the vault into the player were very dirty.

If you need any tips, here's a link to the process.

Certainly you can try that, but he says they won't play in any player.

Worth a shot

All of my BDs that have gone blank are first-generation discs. Heat is likely a contributing factor, but a lot of it seems more likely to just be an issue of early Q&A.

Seeing those little cards (particularly in Fox releases) about how their discs are superdy-duper-concentrated-awesome, so any problems MUST be with the player just make me chuckle at this point.
