Advance notice when pre-ordered movies are released

I recently pre-ordered a few movies and noticed that the release date just said TBA until the moment it released. The way I found out that they were ready to watch is that I got an order confirmation that my credit card had been charged. It'd be great to know a couple days ahead of time when it will be released in case I want to invite some friends over. There doesn't seem to be any other benefit to pre-ordering (since the pricing isn't better than buying it on launch day) so this might be a little something to encourage people to pre-order. (Ideally there should be a price benefit to pre-ordering, because otherwise I'm wondering what's the point?)

We do try to post the expected release dates in advance, but sometimes we're in a bit of a race to the finish because of the timing of getting the assets from the studio and getting it though our content pipeline and review process. We err on the side of caution by not posting dates that we're not certain of.

With that said, personally I am very much in the camp that would like to see the dates, even if there's a possibility that they could change. I will pass along your feedback.

As to the utility of pre-orders, I think there are two that you didn't mention:
  1. We will download pre-ordered movies to your system in advance of the release date and then "activate" them on the date. This is perhaps not as big of a deal now that we have Terra servers and Gigabit+ fiber coming into many homes, but in environments where downloads can take longer, this is a real benefit for someone who might want to watch on release day.
  2. It just gets rid of one other thing that you have to come back and do. I saw the new Spider-Verse movie announcement. I mashed the Pre-order button immediately, and now I don't have to remember to buy it after release. I know I want it. I know I'm going to buy it. So why not just get it out of the way? I did the same w/John Wick 4.

The latter is the reason I pre-ordered the D&D movie and John Wick 4 (and Spider-Verse) as well, but when I realized they were out, I wanted to reach out to some people to get together to watch, which took several days. There was plenty of time to order and download them after they released, so I questioned what the point of pre-ordering them had been. I guess if I'd known in advance what the launch day would be, I could have taken better advantage of the fact that I gotten it so quickly.

As Mike noted above (his #1 comment), regarding preorders, there is a value to those with slow internet in preordering a title, and less so for those with gigabit+ access. We always discuss download speeds with new clients, and I believe at last count approx. 40% were still operating with less than gigabit speeds, and many of those were still below 100Mb. For them, preorders help.

For every title I’ve preordered I just google the “[movie title] digital release date”. Not a sure thing but it’s also never been wrong.
