NEWS: Support for Premiere Systems Going Forward

There's one other service Kaleidescape could offer to help (some of) us make the transition. Kaleidescape use to allow us to import personal home movies onto our Premier systems. I have many decades (dozens) of home videos on my premier server. Would be great if there would be a way for Kaleidescape to help us move that content to our encore systems.

I can replace the commercial content on my premiere servers, but in many cases I no longer have the source files of the personal non-commercial content and thus can't replace it. 😔

The storage size of the 1U+ server is 36TB and it currently is $17,995. There are a total of four 12TB HDD inside, and unlike the Terra where it isn’t necessary, this Premiere server is set up with RAID by Kaleidescape.

How does the co-star with purchase promo work?

I have played with the idea of migrating my 3U HD content to the new mini terra 8GB along with a 4k Strato to join my A/V ecosystem. I have two Premier players attached to my 3U, the large M700 with its disc vault and a 1U HD as well.

Would that qualify for the percent off and a co-star, or two co-stars?

Cheers

It was great that Tayloe brought Premiere back from the dead after it was discontinued and we’ve had a good few bonus years since then. But understandable that it can’t be supported forever. Given the 2-3 year estimate for when the last system might be sold, how long might drives be available for after this and would these be compatible with the older non + 1Us? Would love to keep my system going for as long as possible!

The Premiere line is still the only solution K has for content that isn't hosted on the store, right?

Can someone post the email content? I'm a longtime (and current) Premier system owner but did not receive the email.

Dear Kaleidescape Customer,

In 2020, Kaleidescape announced that we would stop making Premiere equipment. When I joined the company later that year, as a Premiere customer myself, and given the large installed base of Premiere systems at the time, I restarted manufacture of Premiere components.

At the same time, we have been innovating and expanding our Strato product line, introducing larger and more powerful movie servers, adding Dolby Vision capability to our players, lowering the entry cost to the Kaleidescape ecosystem, expanding our movie store, adding rental capability, and more.

But we have now manufactured as many Premiere M300, M500, and 1U+ server boards as we economically can. At current run rates, inventory on hand should last another 2-3 years (which is 8-9 years beyond original plan).

At this time, no immediate action is necessary. However, you may want to consider the status of your system and whether you would like to replace Premiere components before they are gone.

If you would like to move part or all of your movie library to 4K Strato, we will work with you and your dealer on a custom upgrade plan. Please contact your dealer or email upgrades@kaleidescape.com to get started.

Thank you for being a valued Kaleidescape customer.

Sincerely,

H. Tayloe Stansbury
Chairman & CEO

Correct. The Premiere line of components can still "import" disc based content (with some caveats), and "download" from the Store (SD and HD content).

The Encore line (old terminology, now just Strato-Terra line), can only download from the movie store (or replicate between servers).

Are HDD still going to be supported after the servers are gone?

Confirming that Kaleidescape will continue shipping replacement 1U+/1U/3U drives for the foreseeable future. Note that they are now 12TB, as the disk drive manufacturer stopped supplying 6TB drives.

Do the 1U and 3U now support greater than 6TB drives? I remember when the 1U+ came out, the 10TB drives were only available for the 1U+, and the 1U/3U were stuck with 6TB. I'm not sure if that was actually a technical limitation or just a marketing choice.

Hey! I just got a pair of 6T drives. I'm feeling a bit shortchanged .
Given what I paid, I'm not sure I could withstand the sticker shock of 12T drives.

Great to hear there will be 12TB drives for 3U servers! Awesome!

John

1U+ has been shipping with 12TB drives for some time. Those drives were just recently tested and certified for 1U and 3U.
All 3U chassis just became storage-upgradable? I am simultaneously ecstatic and terrified... and belatedly noting how that moves the goalposts so much further on being able to replace them with 1U+s.

Great news. Thanks!

Some questions I have and a calculus, with these 12T drives in mind.

I have a Strato S with 6T and 2 grandfathered 1U's in a different location.
  • What's the "advertised" capacity of the 6T for 4K movies? How many?
  • Can the Strato S play HD movies off the 1U?
Personally, I'm fine with most movies I own being in HD as, other than HDR, 4K doesn't make much difference for most genres (rom-com, e.g.).

If I can keep the Strato S for storing 4K and also have it play HD off the "surplus" 1U I have that would be ideal, I think. Afaict, 12T would hold some thing like 600 HD movies?

A 6TB Strato can store about 80-90 4Ks in my experience.

It is possible for your Strato to play HD movies stored on your 1U servers by pairing the systems and then connecting the Strato to a Premiere player (e.g. M500) using a Co-Star switch. Technically the Strato doesn’t actually play the HD movie - it passes control to the Premiere player via the switch - but it makes it look that way and works seamlessly.

Kaleidescape Co-Star - Kaleidescape

You have a similar set up to mine in terms of the components you have - 1 x 6TB Strato, 2 x 18TB 1U. Except my Strato and 1Us are in the same location (home) and system. This would also need to be the case for you if you want them to work together.

Once paired and Co-Starred the Strato OSD will show all your movies combined across the Strato and 1Us. When you select a movie to watch on the Strato that resides on the 1U, the Strato passes control to the Premiere player via the switch to play it. If that sounds a bit complex, there are lots of historical reasons (technical, legal?) why it has to work this way and which others will know better than me, but in practice once it is set up (easy to do) it all works very nicely. Would recommend!

The way I manage movies and storage across the 2 systems allows me to keep everything present and downloaded in one format or another so it is always available on the OSD, offloading a lot of storage needs to the 1Us and always keeping some spare capacity on the relatively small 6TB Strato for new 4K purchases. When I download a 4K movie to the Strato I also always download the HD version to my 1Us as I have quite a bit of spare capacity on there. It means that for my main Co-Starred Strato zone, once I delete a recently watched 4K movie - perhaps to free up some space - the movie will still be there available in the OSD movie wall, except in HD as that version is still on one of my 1Us. It also means that I have access to all my movies in HD only zones like my home office where I only have a Premiere player. This is a really nice benefit of the paired systems working together and KOS manages it all very elegantly.

Would it work the same if I co-starred the Strato and an M500? How would the Strato know I want to play a silver disc on the M500?
