Last movie watched

Retribution - Better than expected. Sometimes when you set your expectations low enough, they get met and even exceeded! Not every movie has to be cutting edge, deep thinking, Oscar worthy epics, right?!? Either that or I'm a sucker for Liam Neeson movies.
I feel so many of his recent movies in the last 15 years are retreads where he basically plays the same character. A guy with a special set of skills that has to save his family and kill bad guys. It was great for Taken, but got stale fast. Is this any different?

Eh, yes and no. It's in the same genre, but no special set of skills. However, people are killed, and he has to save his family. There's nothing groundbreaking here. If you were bored with the last 6 - 10 then I'd say this isn't for you or at least go in with lower expectations.

I bet I'd enjoy it more than I did Joy Ride 🤣

Long Shot
Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron
Funniest movie I have seen in a long time. It will not disappoint.
The wife and I have different tastes and the first 1/2 of the movie is constant hilarity.

Last week we watched a few amazing movies...

Past Lives - wonderfully written and beautifully shot/edited. I loved that they would let entire conversations play out without a single edit. Just a solid two shot, highlighting the performances. But the cinematography still played a role, even when simply a subtly off-balance framing of a shot to amplify the awkwardness of the conversation. Highly recommended from A24.

A Good Person - Florence Pugh just keeps getting better. Heartbreaking story, more amazing performances, and really well written and directed by Zach Braff. Based on the quality of this one I would've guessed it was A24, but alas, MGM. Great movie.

Talk To Me - another A24 home run. A bit reminiscent of Flatliners, this is fantastic horror. If you're a fan of the genre, this is a great watch.

Renfield - I was disappointed with this one. It was fine, it wasn't a complete waste of time, but I had higher expectations from the trailer. I was expecting more humor, but it seemed 90% of the humor was in the trailer, and the rest was pretty straightforward.

I promise I don't work for A24, I just feel like they're putting out the best quality by a long shot. What they're doing is a great reminder that the story is still the most important part about a movie. Stunts and VFX are very thin without something to care about, whether its good characters or a compelling story, at least great performances.

RE: Long Shot - that was a great movie. We watched a while back and loved it. Exceeded our expectations.

Re Renfield - We watched it the other night too and both enjoyed it here. Something like that always walks a fine line as they ham it up around a loose story line but I thought they managed that. Cage and Hoult were both as good as their roles allowed. Cage particularly so. But this type of movie, more than most, relies on its audience sharing the joke from the off and therefore has a narrower audience I would think. Thankfully we were in that group on the night we watched it :)

We loved Past Lives as well! One of my favorites this year.

I thought the actors were great. Cage had a great Lugosi look.

I saw Die Hard With a Vengeance (again). A great movie and now in 4K on K.
First time ever this movie looks as it did in cinema. I previously have it on Laserdisc, DVD and BD and all off these have extreme edge enhancements.

Recommended! And finally a watchable release that the movie deserves.

Watched “The Holdovers” for probably the 4th time. Wife and I both really enjoy it. Great Christmas aesthetic and looks fantastic in 4K HDR. Would love to see Paul Giamatti pick up an Oscar for this.

I watch way too many movies. I will only mention the ones that really stood out.

Threads gave me nightmares. It is a very disturbing film.

The Creator (2023) had the best robots I have seen in any movie. It is a visually stunning film.

Daliland (2023) Ben Kingsley as Salvador Dali? Yes, please. It wasn’t a great film but I found it interesting.

Renfield (2023) This was unexpected. It started really silly. I said ok it is one of those Nic Cage movies. Once, Nic Cage appeared as Dracula about 15 minutes in, the film went from mediocre to great. Nicolas Cage’s range is truly amazing. His performance in this film is a hidden gem.

"Edge of Tomorrow." Very good, except I hated the final scene and there's a weird sequence in the middle where somehow Cruise's character is able to get off the military base, hop on a motorcycle, and go to London to get a drink. This makes absolutely no sense. I almost feel like there may have been something else in there to explain it because as it is, it's preposterous. How the hell did he get off the military base on a motorcycle to grab a drink in a London bar???
