Last movie watched

Curious if you now feel one should watch (or re-watch) the original before viewing the new one? I’ve not seen the original for many years and barely remember anything other than the high level premise. Does enjoyment of the sequel really improve by being very familiar with the details of the original?
Not sure that it's essential but I bought the original on K to do exactly that. Did the same with Top Gun and probably others. The long gap between the movie releases probably makes this less relevant though. Good excuse to watch a movie that I remember enjoying the first time around.

Beetlejuice on sale this morning.

In a Violent Nature

Absolute banger. Watched this on Shudder last night. A hardcore slasher with some seriously vicious kills. What’s really unique about this flick is that follows the beast and most of the carnage is shown through his POV/ perspective.

Arguably the best horror title of 2024, imho of course. Hope this drops on K. I have already preordered the 4k disc (Germany).

I might be in the minority here, but I think I had more fun with the sequel. I watched them back2back on consecutive days. The original is a classic but feels a bit dated imho. I love both, but the new version just feels like a total package. Great audio and video as well.

I wish it is 2.40 or 2.20. Did anyone watch stretching to 2.40 and if it looks good? Not sure if they did similar to Avatar to not to lose details. It is interesting Tim Burton movies are mostly if not all not 2.40 AR.

Guessing he went with 1.85 to match the original's 1.85 AR.

The Wild Robot

Probably one of the best animated movies I have watched in recent times. Heartwarming story, which can be enjoyed by everyone in the family. Excellent video and audio. I won’t be surprised if this wins multiple nominations/awards.

Last night's Halloween movie watch. Not quite up to the quality of some of this year's horror films (Longlegs, In a Violent Nature, Strange Darling..) but still fun and creepy. The K 4K transfer looked and sounded great. I've already preordered the sequel which looks entertaining as well.

Just curious is Longlegs in the k store in the US? I know it’s not in the Canadian store.

Alien: Romulus

Finally got a chance to watch this and round out my Alien marathon. Really enjoyed this latest drop, as it goes back to its alien roots and manages to up the ante. The audio is the star of the show, probably the best you will experience in 2024. Bonafide demo worthy atmos track and breathtaking PQ. Can’t wait for the next chapter.

I agree, I really think this new film could be a franchise reboot in the right direction.

Wind River - a fantastic thriller with superb acting.

That's one I've watched more than once. Outstanding film.
Funny thing... I've had that movie owned and on my Kaleidescape for many years but somehow it hasn't made it to the top of my queue to actually watch. Now I'm going to have to prioritize it. 👍

Hopefully this gets a 4k release on K, down the line. I picked up the Walmart edition UHD steelbook and it’s the best it has ever looked / sounded. Great movie with beautiful cinematography.

If you like Taylor Sheridan stuff (Sicario, Hell or High Water), I think you'll like it. I think he creates a great mood with the cinematography and the soundtrack choices to complement the very fine performances.

The Righteous was a great slow burn movie for Halloween. Shot beautifully in black and white.

I thought I'd offer some thoughts on two recent and fairly divisive films. I found both interesting, and both entertained me, but I also find it difficult to outright recommend either:

Megalopolis: Honestly, I probably like the story of the film more than the film itself, and I'm quite sure Francis Ford Coppola is fine with that. Here's a director that I like, taking his own personal wealth and making a film for an audience of one (himself). And, I wonder how much he did it for the final product or the act itself. He'd certainly accept accolades, but I think this film will have a limited audience.

Fortunately, I'm in that limited crowd. It starts from the beginning as "A Fable", and it is indeed that. If you're open-minded, don't get turned off by bizarre leaps, and enjoy seeing a master filmmaker experiment in his own playground, you may just dig it. I appreciate the criticism out there, but at worst this is a "not my taste" and not what I'd call a "bad" film. Still, it's almost certainly going into my "Incomprehensible Drivel" collection once my pre-order download is authorized.

The Substance is a film I've been awaiting for some time, and I thought it was the rare bizarre/arthouse film that I could watch with my wife due to the cast. And, I was right. Unfortunately, we each had different experiences and while I came away enjoying the overall package, it does come with a fairly significant caveat. I'm going to use spoiler text here, though I won't get into specific plot points:

As anyone can tell from the trailers, this is a film that's firmly in the "body horror" genre. Even with that known, the third act makes a leap that is going to lose a LOT of the potential audience. To paraphrase Tropic Thunder: "You never go FULL Cronenberg." The film went from something we expected to recommend to friends and family to something we talked about with each other and then moved on from.

I enjoyed The Substance but acknowledge this also has a limited audience; more limited than would be anticipated from the trailer. This film is shot beautifully, cast incredibly, and will certainly spur discussion. I want to see more from this director, I'm just not recommending it to my parents or in-laws as I anticipated I might.

*"Incomprehensible Drivel" is one of my K Collections where a promising director is given carte blanche by a studio only to realize that they most certainly need some editorial/production guidance. Ari Astor's "Beau is Afraid", Alex Garland's "Men", Darren Aronofsky's "Mother", Christopher Nolan's "Tenet", Richard Kelly's "Southland Tales", David Robert Mitchell's "Under the Silver Lake", etc. (For the record, I own and support all of these films.)
