Universal is going Day and Date!

That article is saying “The Hunt”, “The Invisible Man” and “Emma” will be released this Friday, March 20th.

I think this current environment will force change a lot of things - both good and bad - going forward... exciting times / scary times

Unless the theater industry collapses, this is temporary. There were meetings with NATO and other stakeholder groups indicating they will return to normal after this Pandemic passes. That's the plan, but obviously fluid at this point.

The above being said, I don't think the theaters will disappear, unlike some businesses, all they have to do is turn off the lights, lock the building, and wait it out. There is nothing they own that has a shelf life, and their usual customers are not going away, so damage to that model is minimal compared to other businesses.

Their stocks will tank for now, but should rebound in the future, but in any case, that shouldn't directly affect the ability to reopen when they are able.

BTW, there will not be an opening of the flood gates of films to VOD. The movies making it to VOD are the latest releases from some studios of movies currently in theaters, or scheduled to release this week. Other films that are projected to be big sales drivers, and scheduled to release over the next few months will be held back by the studios and released when theaters are back to normal operations. (Assuming nothing changes, that's what was stated in meetings with owners.)

Jim

Still, one thing that's pretty game-changing about this is that, when you consider that Universal -- one of the original founding partners of PRIMA Cinema -- used to offer day-and-date titles for $500 VIEWING and requiring a $35,000 piece of hardware to view them, this is a huge decision for them to make. Especially when we will get true day-and-date with Trolls at $19.99 playable on a (presumably) wide array of hardware. That's an insane discount. I'm just curious if it will be in 4K HDR and with a Dolby Atmos or DTS:X soundtrack.... Also, other than Emma, I don't see any of the other titles even listed as pre-order on the K-store which is a bit odd, right....?

Jim - do you have any insight as to whether K will be able to offer these day and date release alongside the other providers?

No, sorry, that has not been mentioned by anyone. (Doesn't mean it isn't being discussed in the background.)

Edit

The studios are building up content that needs to be released to maintain, as best they can, their annual release schedules. This Pandemic has companies making difficult decisions, and this is likely going to be the case for awhile. They didn't want to release in VOD, but they are not reaching the numbers they expected in theaters, and obviously that's only going to get worse in the near term. Schedules are a big part of the financial planning for studios, so I expect we'll see others doing something similar soon.

Available as a preorder without a release date for the time being. Curious to see if it will be available next Tuesday

Theater Owners Urge Congress to Move Quickly on Aid; Pledge $1 Million to Movie Theater Employees
Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles, Calif.- 18 March 2020
The movie theater industry and its employees ask for Congress and the Administration to urgently consider the following immediate relief measures, which we hope will allow the industry and its 150,000 employees, who live and work in practically every Congressional District, to weather the present COVID-19 pandemic crisis, including:
  • Loan guarantees that ease a liquidity squeeze imposed by fixed costs in the face of non-existent revenues.
  • Tax benefits to assist employers with providing support to employees;
  • Relieving the burden of costs that are ongoing despite closures; and
  • Tax measures that will allow theaters recoup losses when the industry is back up and running.
The business model of the movie theater industry is uniquely vulnerable in the present crisis.
As we confront this evolving and unprecedented period, we call on Congress and the Administration to ensure that America’s movie theater industry and its tens of thousands of employees across the country can remain resilient.
Additionally, the Executive Board of the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) today authorized $1 million dollars drawn from the Association’s reserve to aid movie theater employees who are out of work due to movie theater closures stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. The money will be used as seed funds for an effort to help tide workers over in this crisis in cooperation with our industry partners. Details of the fund will be released shortly.
ABOUT NATO
The National Association of Theatre Owners is the largest exhibition trade organization in the world, representing more than 33,000 movie screens in all 50 states, and more than 32,000 additional screens in 98 countries worldwide.
Headquartered in Washington, D.C., with a second office in North Hollywood, California, NATO represents its members in the heart of the nation’s capital as well as the center of the entertainment industry. From these vantage points, NATO helps exhibition influence federal policy-making and work with movie distributors on all areas of mutual concern, from new technologies to legislation, marketing, and First Amendment issues. www.natoonline.org

Yup, knew about that. The $1 Mil approved by the Association will help some of the 170,000 employed in the industry in the short term.

With almost everything in Switzerland being closed, all the family is at home. Wife's working out every day but the fitness club where she goes will be closed until April 19th. She was complaining a bit about the situation so I told her that K offers many titles for working out from home from a studio called Gaiam.

https://www.kaleidescape.com/movie-store/collection/gaiam

Bought two Jillian Michaels BDs and since few days now she praises K for its offering and simplicity of use. Happy wife happy life, do not hesitate to suggest to your other half !

On another note, it seems that tomorrow our government will impose home confinement. Lots of discussions are also going on with the intention to limit Netflix's bandwidth, our main Internet provider is under huge stress as most of the population works from home. Having a Kaleidescape system and being able to enjoy my movies whenever I want and do not depend on streaming is great.

Stay safe and please do not underestimate the situation. It is serious.

Best to you are your family Kostas!
