NEWS: Kaleidescape Launches New Version of Cinema One

Sounds like you have a handle on everything. I use my Oppo for SACD. I use the K system for CD's and it sounds surprisingly good.

John

Thanks John. I am a long term fan and this seems to have helped make my decision.

Cheers

Raj

Does this mean they are getting rid of DVD storage? To me that makes Kaleidescape less appealing since you can no longer site your collection on the system until kaleidescape signs up that studio. I guess they need to still differentiate between the full blown system and the cinema one/alto.

No, storage will still exist. When you download from the store this will be stored on your hard-drive be it cinema one. Alto or premiere line.

What you will lose from being a new k customer is the ability to copy your own DVDs and Blu-Rays straight from the disc.

The only change affecting Servers (1U / 3U) sold as part of a new system (whether or not a new K owner) is the restriction against DVD importing to the Server from a physical disc. Blu-ray import capability has not changed, you can still import to, and playback from, a K Server system (provided the BR disc is stored in an attached Vault, which has always been a requirement). All Cinema One's sold prior to the Nov. 30th cutoff function in the same manner.

The Alto was created in part as a response to the DVD Settlement, but also because K had planned to offer a device that would be available to more consumers (based on pricing) and interface with the content being offered thru the K Store. They also wanted to insure the "K Experience" would be, to the extent possible, maintained in this new component. Having worked with the Alto over the past month I can say they have succeeded (but hey, that's K, so I expected no less!).:)

With the help of Jim, I will soon own KScape Alto. Thanks again. I cannot wait for it to ship.

Unfortunately some of us still do not have access to any content from the K-Store

Understood my friend, unfortunately, reaching into other countries for business can sometimes be at a minimum complicated, and in some cases impossible. Much of this is also driven by contractual limitations, and other limitations created by content owners. There is no incentive for K to ignore owner's that could be supporting the K Store.:)

Jim

Yep, understood...obviously Alto has no application in this market until we can access the Store. But K might appease us by returning to the free video bookmarking service until such time as we have access to the Store :D

You could still use them to rip BDs, after adding a vault.

As I think of it, this means they now have three product-lines (Premier, Cinema, and Alto,) none of which talk to each other. That's a rather frightful amount of fragmentation starting to occur at the consumer end. Then again, with the M1 no longer listed on the website, and existing owners finding themselves with the "Alto-only" feature of cataloging, it likely is being phased-out.

The Cinema One is indeed being phased out. It is still available from dealers for a very short time, after which it will only be available as an add-on to an existing C1 system to expand capacity by adding the second C1. K will of course continue to fully support the component going forward.

I'm confused here. What is an M1? Or is that just a typo?

John

Typo, he meant C1, there is no M1. (Probably caused by the "C" ket being so close to the "M" key...:D)

No typo... rather than differentiating a 3rd/4th generation (or remembering how many hardware refreshes the C1 went through) Cinema One, I think it's easier to just note it is the M-class variant. Luckily we finally have a new name, so it will soon be less of an issue.

Remember they always change the names so as to reward and hide the guilty whilst at the same time punishing the innocent :D

What is the purpose of the forthcoming link to the DV700 vault if the Alto cannot store DVDs (&BluRays) from disc as opposed to downloading them?

What is the purpose of the forthcoming link to the DV700 vault if the Alto cannot store DVDs (&BluRays) from disc as opposed to downloading them?

Because the plan is to allow the optical drive in the DV700 to act as a "playback" device (essentially a Player). Keep in mind that some folks own movies on DVD and BR that are not in the store and cannot therefore receive a digital offer to add them to the Server. Cataloging these discs (placing them in the Alto tray to be identified) allows them to appear in the OSD, and selecting them from the OSD will allow them to be played directly from the DV700, with the use of K's bookmarking as well. That's the plan.

Jim

So, if I understand this correctly, the DV700 will house the discs and play them as a jukebox, unlike its role with the other systems?

Correct, but to be clear, content in the Alto Server (downloaded content, both DVD and BR quality) plays back from the Server in the same manner as all K products (with minor exceptions), and physical discs owned but that are not available in the K Store can be stored in, and played back from the Vault. These discs will also receive bookmarking type playback if that disc is in K's system and already bookmarked (i.e. "Play Movie" etc.).

Jim

Thanks for all good information on Alto. I have a quick question and hope some one can help.

Currently assume I have 200 blu rays & 300 DVD's. Out of this 70 of them are in store. I can have all 70 downloaded, but can also have rest 430 catalogued correct?

Cheers
