Kaleidescape launches movie download store

This is fantastic news. Is it perfect? Nope. We still need the store to transition out of beta, provide HD and, of course, more movie studios on board. What this does, however, is provide a glimpse into the future of K, which looks really, really good.

I've been contemplating upgrading some of my SD material to HD but haven't done so because of the cost. Absorbing the full costs of a new blu-ray when I already own the DVD has been the issue. When the K store offers this "upgrade" at a lesser cost I will absolutely be upgrading part of my collection.

Makes me excited to be a K owner. Hopefully the Ipad app gets updated soon. Maybe 4tb disks next year?

I'd also love to know when this will hit the UK... any clues?
Interesting that WB is the first to offer; WB own Flixster who do their UV fulfilment, and also Rotten Tomatoes which featured in the recent ipad app updates.
Flixster is available in the UK but the title selection is tiny still - around 120 that they are offering UV download on.
The other studios don't seem to be anywhere near as forward-looking as WB - and I see Universal are / were getting behind the Prima Cinema thing...

The next VHS vs Betamax? (and who could forget Video2000...!)

Pricing? (Catalog titles, new releases) - ballpark

I can't see because it requires a login and I don't have an invite yet.

thanks

Very competitive. During the Beta, I researched 20 titles at random between Amazon and K and found that half were about even in cost, of the other half, K was less expensive than Amazon on about half of those titles. The largest price difference I noticed was Amazon being cheaper by about $6, and this was only one title.

The average price of the titles (SD quality) I downloaded during the Beta was about $12. (BTW, several were $0.49 (Yes, 49 cents!).

I'll be very excited to find out when it will be in Canada. It will also be interesting to compare US to Canadian pricing. I hope it is uniform or equivalent.

I live less than 5 miles from the border; so close that my cell phone sometimes goes into roaming while still in my house. Now if I could only get my IP address to do the same! :)

You can actually see prices - you just can't purchase without an account. Just pick a movie and you get a synopsis along with pricing.

This is great! I can't wait for HD in 1Q.

http://www.unblock-us.com/

Works for almost all US services - does however not seem to work with the K Store.... :(

C'mon, you didn't really think those guys could get past K's engineers???:D

(That would be like my two year old twins and their friends trying to get past Notre Dame's front seven!!) (Had to get the ND plug into one of these posts!:D)

Boom. Just like that, there's no need for the disc vault. Glad I passed. This is definitely great news though! hD content without the vault and discs!

Like many here, I had too many BR discs to pass on the vaults, but certainly will be nice going forward for those that want to build their HD quality collection at a more reasonable cost.:)

... so maybe they'll now cut the price of the vaults?

Well, the $0.49 titles were specific to the beta test period as a way of letting beta test users exercise the system without undue personal cost. (Kaleidescape picked one title each day for a "Flash Sale" for beta testers only, and they made it $0.49 for 24 hours. Usually back-catalog stuff. Not sure if K subsidized the rest of the fee owed to WB or if WB supported this discounted limited price for testing puruposes.)

BUT, Kaleidescape sent an email today announcing the end of the daily $0.49 movie titles since the beta test period has ended.

So, the pricing is pretty good, but don't count on $0.49 coming back again!

"Official" tour of the new store, from Kaleidescape team.

Did anyone else notice in the last sentence of the LA Times article, it states that K is currently developing a 'less expensive server' that it hopes to sell for closer to $3000! I think I'd like to see that more than 4tb disks.

True, I should have mentioned that, a re-read does leave the impression these will be available. Thanks Josh!:)

Not sure how they got that info, obviously must have been during an interview. "Assuming" it's true, it could be a Server as we know them, or it could be something with much less capability BUT the ability to act as short term storage for downloads. Perhaps not the same degree of collectability we currently enjoy, but a way to get access to the store on a much cheaper level. Just a thought.

Jim

I know no one wants to think the worst, but if for some reason K goes out of business, what happens to all the content we have purchased? Could this be migrated to another system? Or can we also get a physical disk?

I hate surprises!!
