Over the next few weeks, we are rolling out the kOS 10.20.0 software release. With this release, we have implemented several updates for Strato V customers, including a download progress indicator, improvements to cover art scaling, and bug fixes. We have also added system activation for the mobile app and made improvements for large system performance. We will send an email as well as a post here with a full list of feature updates early next week.

Dolby Vision and HDR10 metadata fix? 🙏

Awesome! 👏 Super excited to hear that the improvement to cover art 4K scaling is included in this update. At least it will finally end the 1080p UI debate.

I'll be very interested in hearing how much improvement this provides. It's my understanding that the hardware is still 1080p for the UI, but that the upscaling has been improved. So it may not be as good as the native 4k UI in the Strato C. But if it is substantially better, that might be enough so I'd feel comfortable giving the Strato V a try.

If they implemented something that would allow our Video Processors to upscale, it might even be better. Eg keep the menu at 1080P native and allow our processors to do the upscaling, but play back movies at 4K. I doubt very seriously that the V could ever do as good a job as a dedicated VP (Envy, Lumagen)….

The improvement to the cover art images are coming in two phases. Phase 1 are the changes we have made in kOS 10.20.0 that improves the quality and sharpness of the 1080p cover art when it is scaled to 2160p. Additionally, we have updated the "Allow display mode changes (use external scaler)" setting for Strato V to output the OSD at 1080p so that those of you with external video processors can use those to upscale the OSD to 4K.

The second phase of the improvements are changes we are making to our headed tools that are used to generate and transform our cover art images to make those images sharper. These updated tools are slated to go into service in mid-December.

Sounds like a fantastic update! Resolves the major two things I was really hoping for with the Strato V (add native 1080p OSD output, and HDR10 metadata passthrough). As always really appreciate y'all being so communicative and open to the feedback expressed here on the forums, kudos @MikeKobb, @J.Green, and all the individuals on the K team working on these improvements in the background!

Exactly how? If it is still just scaled cover art, it will still not compare to the native 4K interface of the C.

J. Green - that is awesome news! The GUI/Cover Art is the first thing friends and family see / their first impression of the magic that is Kaleidescape! It's the sizzle, not the steak - but important for that customer experience wow factor.

Hi New here.

I checked my Strato V and I'm still on 10.19, Curious when software is updated. If the Strato V is turned off, does it still get the update ? Or do I need to keep it ON ?

K gathers all devices into batches and rolls out to the batches over weeks. Although you can try things like restarting your device to try to initiate a check, it's not going to change the batch that you're in. Given that so many updates are related to Strato V, I'd imagine K is prioritizing those devices. Give it some time, there's method to the madness.

I'm really hoping this update (whenever I receive it) will fix my issues. This is my first experience with Kscape and I have to say it's been a bit underwhelming. I'm really trying to reserve judgement until I have had my V and server for a while but it's pretty discouraging to know what this system costs and that I have $200 (and less) media players working flawlessly with HDR and DV files. I finally took the leap with Kscape due to the convenience and promise of the best quality available. I'm not feeling it so far.

This is my first experience with Kscape as well. Yes, it's expensive, but I'm pretty happy so far... The only issue for me... is that there are some titles that don't support Strato V. My understanding is that they are working on updating titles... but I don't know if there's a list that you can request in order to be playable on Strato V.

They're working on all titles, but it depends on availability of the mezzanine files used to encode the Kaleidescape versions.

You can track their progress here:

So, what is the story with availability of Dolby Vision titles? I have a lot of discs that are DV but only HDR on Kaleidescape. An example is 1917 which just happens to be one of my go to DV movies for demos and evaluation. I was surprised to see that it not available in DV on Kaleidescape. Will titles like that get a conversion to DV or option in the future?

If you filter in the store, we are at ~300 DV titles right now. I think we had about 100 when the V shipped, IIRC? Not a bad rate of update, IMO.

I've bought about 40 of them so far. I guess I'm just wondering if a DV disc means there will be a DV Kaleidescape download or is it on a title by title basis? The Indiana Jones movies are another example. I grew up with these movies and have the DV discs. I would hope that comes to Kaleidescape.

It'll be on a title by title basis, but I'd imagine Kaleidescape is targeting 100% of DV titles, provided they have a contract in place with the studio. As with all other titles, if the studio owning the digital distribution rights will not provide the title to Kaleidescape, they can't offer the title.

Important to remember, if you purchase the HDR10 version, the future update to DV is free.
