Top Gun Maverick video issues

I have downloaded 15 or so movies. 1.85 to 1 and 2.4 to 1. No problems. But Top Gun Maverick is not displaying correctly.

First, I noticed that it says it comes in 1.85 to 1. Do I have the wrong file? I would certainly prefer 2.4 to 1. And when I show this 1.85 to 1 file, it does not fill the screen vertically or horizontally. Even with the format changes during the movies. Something is different about this one. Ridiculous amount of unused video space all around the image.

Top Gun Maverick is multi-aspect. 1.85 for the major flying sequences and 2.4 for everything else. What is your setup?

I have a projector preset for 1:85 and another for 2 4. And a third for anamorphic 2.4. But the picture from Kaleidescape doesn't play right with any of them.

I can zoom it up and adjust to fit (1:85 or 2.4) but not only is there unused space (faint light) above and below, but also on the sides. Something is wrong. The usable picture is just a small image.

I believe the taller scenes in Maverick are actually 1.9:1 along with the 2.40:1 scope scenes.

Kaleidescape only reports certain “core” aspect ratios in the user interface. Those are used as a base aspect and the in-between ratios like 2:1 or 2.2:1 etc have trim values in the metadata for masking systems.

Variable aspect ratio movies are a gimmick, and the vast majority are framed to be 2.40:1 safe because they screen in non-imax theaters as well. The best way to watch these at home on a scope screen is to lock the image to your 2.40:1 lens memory, let your projector mask off the image outside of 2.40:1 and enjoy the film ignoring the fact the director couldn’t make up their mind.

So I would mask this movie with unused masked space on top and bottom, as well as on the sides? Seems like such a waste of resources.

No, you watch it in scope format, just cutting of the top and bottom in the 1.90:1 scenes.
Or you can use a videoprocessor and have it fit the 1.90:1 scenes into your scope screen. That way, you wouldn´t lose any content, but the IMAX-scenes would appear smaller than the scope scenes when actually the director´s intent would be the other way round.

Having unused pixels on top and bottom make total sense for the scope scenes. But for some reason on this one movie there are unused pixels top and bottom AND on the sides. Like the picture is floating in the middle of it. I can zoom up to fill the screen, but there is unused pixels all the way around.

read my post again. The content is 1.90:1. Your lens memory is 1.85:1. This is resulting in the slice of unused pixels at the top and bottom on the 1.9:1 scenes.

There are about a dozen aspect ratios being used today. You should learn about them all and how they are delivered within the home video delivery systems or buy a video processor (Lumagen, MadVR) and let it handle all your aspect ratio switching so you don’t have to think about it.
