Stratos S 6tb with failed hard drive

Hey guys, would love to get some advice and guidance.

I have an opportunity to purchase a Stratos S 6tb that shows a failed hard drive. Was wondering if that's something that Kaleidescape would support servicing (replacement of the hard drive) or if it's possible without the storage to use it as an end player device as I have a compact Terra and another Stratos S 6tb on the network.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Mike

I appreciate that someone is trying to sell this unit to recoup some cost, but the only value of this device is for spare parts. And, generally, the most sought after spare part would be a working drive.

The exception would be if the unit was still under warranty, but if it was then the current owner would surely have it repaired. Regarding your question, the Strato S cannot function without its drive. The player is essentially non-functional.

Kaleidescape will not offer support on this item, there is no trade-in value, and the guidance from K will be to buy a new player/server. Sorry.

Sell the power supply, that should be worth $50, maybe another $25 for the remote.

It's sad that these units are little more than a paperweight.

My 22tb Terra failed in less than a year. It was replaced under warranty, but I am very concerned about the lifespan. I've had many PC hard drives fail on me over the years.

Unfortunately, if it were to happen to me and I were outside of warranty right now, I'd be out of the Kscape server game.

Fortunately I have two Strato V and they have an SSD, but that still doesn't replace the Terra.

So far, in my experience, if you have a good dealer that has been with you from the beginning, he/she will always provide you a fair solution, even in these SOL situations.

FYI, the original post isn’t from the owner of the failed device. It’s a potential buyer of a failed device seeking advice.

Advice: Don’t Buy This. :)

I hope Kaleidescape introduces an extended warranty program, similar to AppleCare+, where customers can register within 45 days of the original purchase. It would make Kaleidescape even more incredible!

[You] can extend the warranty. It should be possible to add at least two more years on.

Not for Terra-Strato products. Like Premiere line, the Terra-Strato products originally came with a 3 year warranty, extendable up to 2 additional years for a fee. K decided to eliminate the need for the extended warranty purchase and increased the warranty to 5 years.

There is currently no ability to increase the warranty beyond the 5 years.

Having said that, with the right CC, you can get a free one year extension for a total of 6.

With Centurion you get 3 additional years, as long as the original warranty was 5 years or less, so perfect for Strato-Terra.

Hmm, was thinking it was originally 2-years and could add five more, for a total of seven Guess I'll have to update my notes.

Hi Jim,

You really caught my interest with your Centurion recommendation. That is, until I saw the $10,000 initiation fee plus $5,000 annually! Ouch.

Yes, it is an expensive card, I only mentioned it because it's the only one I know of that provides the 3 year warranty extension. I like it mainly because it is never declined, never holds up a purchase regardless of what you purchase, and it's particularly beneficial to have when traveling overseas. The Concierge service is also incredible.

Wait - you mean to tell me that K-scape will not repair a Strato with a defective HD? They will not replace the HD, even for a fee? That’s ridiculous.

Not for one of these devices if it is outside of warranty. I believe the hard drive on a full size terra can be replaced, but not on any Strato and not on a compact terra. I'm sure someone here can confirm. Asurion has an electronics plan, but I think it only covers up to $2k pee incident and $5k annually.

Strato (the original), Strato-S, and any Compact device (Terra/Strato-V) have a 5 year warranty. There is currently no way to extend the warranty beyond the initial 5 years. If any of those devices fail outside the warranty period, regardless of the reason for the failure, there in no repair service or drive replacement option.

Any full sized Terra server that experiences a drive failure outside of warranty does have replacement drives available for purchase. If the failure is related to the chassis itself, not a drive, there is currently an option to purchase a new chassis, but not sure how long that option will be available because it is actually related to the current Terra > Terra Prime chassis upgrade for those that want to move to the latest Terra chassis (Prime).

The reasoning related to drives has to do with fact that the full sized Terra servers have accessible drive bays that make the drive replacement a simple process, whereas the Strato/Strato-S and compact Terra and Strato-V, do not have field replaceable drives because of the compact design.

I’m probably going to take heat here, I just can’t see why these couldn’t be repaired with new drives. It would take 5 mins to replace one.
