R_Volution (Zappiti successor)

I was under the impression that they couldn’t legally offer their NAS in the US but it seems they figured out a way. It looks like they have 2 versions now, one that can rip discs and one that can’t.

I see the one that can’t rip discs on their US store for $2,700 for the server chassis only. 3 playback zones only, excluding HDDs (min. 3 HDD required), excluding cloud storage to back up your content, no digital content store (i.e. Kaleidescape Store) and questionable legality. Kaleidescape doesn’t seem all that expensive anymore.

Or they'll offer it and get shut down again and pop up again this fall under yet another name?

3x 12 TB Enterprise grade HDD for 24TB usable storage (RAID5 reserves 1 drive for parity) $1,000
24 TB cloud storage $550/month (Google Drive), $6,600/year

I get it most people will put their faith in RAID5 and skip cloud storage. If you are a tech person, you can save money handling most of the work yourself, rather than a complete turn key solution. However, apples to apples comparison, Kaleidescape is a better value once you factor in all of its benefits.

To me this isn't an either/or. Whatever this new company name is (formerly Zappiti) is not a replacement for Kaleidescape because K does not have every title I've had in my disc collection; not even close. I wish there was a less controversial way to keep and play digital copies of my discs (because living in a NYC studio apartment does not leave space for a large physical discs collection.)

There will be a US version of the NAS.
The US version will not have a drive built into it.
It retails for $ 2,699.99

Since I have an Oppo 4K disc player, a Synology NAS with Plex, and a K, what is the role of an R-Volution? Is it largely a more turnkey disc-ripping and presenting platform?

One key advantage that these media players (R_volution, Dune, Zidoo) used to offer was the ability to export a frame-packed 3D signal. This is something not readily available on streamers like Apple TV and nVidia Shield. However, with the latest round of hardware from all three of these companies, 3D signal support has been dropped. This wasn't due to a specific desire on any company's part, but rather the lack of support by the chipmakers. On the plus side, all three still have prior generation devices for sale.

Yup - The Amologic Chip available to these Media Players makers does not support frame packed 3D.
I have Hoarded three RealTek Chip based Dune payers although I only need one :-)

I only use the r_volution player (really a Zappiti) and not the NAS but the main reasons I prefer to use it over Plex for movies:

1) The r_volution supports full BD ISO playback with menus.

2) ISO files are easier to rip vs mkv with respect to forced subtitles and extras.

3) The r_volution playback engine is generally bullet proof compared to virtually all of the different plex clients (Nvidia Shield, Apple TV, etc). I don’t have any issues with bitstreaming or stuttering like I do on those platforms. I also don’t get random updates that completely crater things.

All of that being said, I still use Plex for TV shows because the r_volution has limited flexibility in that regard (cannot specify alternate episode orders) and I also use it for my kid’s movies so they can easily watch them on various devices in the house.

Thank you for that context. It sounds like a great option for unmet needs.

I can totally relate to keeping Plex for the kids in other rooms. That’s pretty much why mine is still in use.

I had some Zappiti mini’s before and considered their NAS before they quit selling it in the United States. Not too happy with the company disappearing and than reappearing with a new name and similar products. This looks like the same NAS with a new name….

They’re like an Ali Express vendor. If you keep shutting down and opening under a new brand/umbrella, in different countries, it’s difficult to prosecute copyright law.

No, It's not like that at all!
The two owners had a falling out after the lawsuit but one wanted to continue to support it.
So he created the R-Volution company.
You can still use all of your Zappiti NASs and players.
You will have to download some new software and have to pay for the new Database service but once you do that then it's just like the old system but better.
They do have a new NAS but it does not come with a drive built into it to comply with US regulations.
If you have any questions shoot them an email.
They are very responsive.

I have been a K user for a long time but have always had a NAS for storing my ripped movies [about 600 of them], most of which were purchased prior to owning my KScape system. Also includes many discs that K simply does not have [concert videos].

Up until a few weeks ago, I've used Plex running on a Nvidia Shield. But I now have an R_Volution Player One 8K. While it does have some very slick features and capabilities, there are two things that have jumped out to me that really do favor K.

(1) Initial setup. K requires very few parameters to get started. The effort required to get the R_Volution product up and running was far more time consuming, and complex, and error prone. And that excludes the actual ripping process.

(2) User interface. Confession: I've complained about some things in the K UI over the years that I thought could be greatly improved. While those things still exist, after my experience with the R product, those things now look tiny in comparison.

After the last few days, I have been "re-introduced" to how really "slick" the entire process is in using K. So smooth; seamless; so integrated. And the searching for, buying and downloading of movies is so very simple [and addictive and expensive]. It is one of those products that you have to experience to appreciate what you get [and why it costs as much as it does].

I did use this conversion to R_Volution as an "opportunity" to purchase many of my "cataloged" movies that are on my NAS at, for the most part, very attractive pricing - 46 of them to be exact

Hats off to K!

I pretty much agree with all of this. I'm still on one of the older Zappitis and it's just a totally different animal. Zappiti requires quite a bit of work to set up your library, and to get it to line up properly. It lets you do quite a bit of customization, which I end up doing. But it serves a specific purpose.

Is there a way to easily improve the resolution of the cover art? I looks like less than HD.
