    • Use the "Conversation" feature (known as "private messaging" on other forums) to communicate directly with any of the other users here.
    • Access the Files area. The "resources" area of the forum contains many "Favorite Scene" and Script files that can dramatically increase the enjoyment of your Kaleidescape system. Go directly to great scenes in your favorite movies, created by other owners, and add automation to playback of your system with Scripts.
    • You won't see this annoying notice at the top of every screen!😊

It's easy and free to register for the forum. Just click the "Register" button in the upper right corner of this page, and follow the instructions there.

  • 🔷Why can't I make a new post here in "The Marketplace"? 🤔

All registered users can reply to other members' posts here in the Marketplace, to respond as potential buyer or ask questions of the seller.
However, only members who have paid to become "Premium" members or "Patrons" can make a new "for sale" post here in Marketplace.

Premium memberships can be purchased for as little as $10... a very reasonable fee in order to sell equipment here, far lower than the seller's fee would be on eBay or Audiogon or other sites. Our site doesn't sell ads or sell user's information. This small fee is the only source of funds for the site to offset the costs it takes to run the forum.

For more information on purchasing a Premium or Patron membership, please see the Account Upgrades section of your user profile.

NOTE ABOUT BUYING USED KDISKS (DRIVES)

I decided to post this in a "sticky" to remind members about the purchase or sale of used KDISK (drives).

First, when any new drive is placed in a K component (Server, Server-Players) the drive becomes part of that Server's system of drives. It does not matter whether or not that drive ever received content, it is still identified to the drive set in that Server. Subject to the exception discussed in #3 below, it cannot be removed, sold, and placed in a different device (Server) UNLESS it is first reinitialized by K, and this process requires returning the drive to K to have this done. Once a drive is reinitialized, it can then be placed in any Server/device capable of using that drive. Here are the other considerations:

1. K will only reinitialize drives that are still in warranty.
2. There is a fee for this service. It was $250 for the first 6 drives, and $30 per additional drive in the past, check with K Support for current fees.
3. This process is not required if ALL of the drives in a particular Server are being removed and placed in a different EMPTY Server. You cannot add the drive set to a Server containing other drives. This is important because some Seller's of drives have told potential buyers that as long as you are buying and installing all of their drives, you can place them in a Server that already has drives but has enough empty space to accommodate the used drives. This is incorrect.

So when shopping for used drives, be sure to confirm the drives have either been reinitialized by K, or understand that you need ALL of the drives that were in the Seller's Server and that you are placing the full set in an empty Server.

Additional note: Given the recent changes at K, it is possible that the ability to reinitialize drives may end at some point, or the fee structure may change.

I'm posting here again, just as a reminder. Buying used drives is always a risk, but can't be helped if you need drives for a 5U Server. Two people have already reported being sold drives, or drive sets, that did not work.

First, there are no new 5U drives available. The last new drive size offered by K was the 1TB drive, and those have been sold out and have not been available for many years. Used drives only work in a different Server when they have been "reinitialized" by K, and K only re-initializes drives that are still under warranty. There are zero 5U drives out there that are eligible because warranties on these drives expired many years ago.

So what does that mean?

1. Always confirm the status of the drives (do they work, if they are single drives have they been re-initialized, or if the sale is for a complete drive set removed from another server confirm the drive set was working when it was removed).

2. If concerned, be sure you can return the drives to Seller for a full refund if the drives don't work as stated. (One buyer recently informed me they purchased a "set" of drives from another member that did not work, and apparently the Seller would not take them back or refund the buyer.)

As always when buying anything used, "caveat emptor."

Can I buy a set of drives meant for a 1U and place them in an empty 3U chassis?
Yes but it would be operating without a hotspare (since the 1U doesn't support having a hotspare). You would need to purchase an additional drive that was the same size (or larger) as the largest drive in the 1U disk set to add to the chassis as the hotspare.

Thanks for letting me know :)
I have a couple of empty 3U's that I'm trying to decide what to do with :)

The logical thing would be just keep them for parts, but my live 3U is maxed out, and i have an itch to add more content :)

recent White House Executive Order specific to right to repair?
Ouh… did this EO become law in the US? There is a similar in the EU now (which I assume still applies in the UK - who knows after that stupid thing call B*****) I always wondered how/if this effects things like HDDs not being able to be replaced in Strato‘s for instance
