Need to buy a 1U Server

Two options:

1. Keep an eye on the used market (but be careful on Ebay), try to locate a working replacement.

2. Purchase a new 1U+ Server from K, if you want to stay with a Premiere system.

The 1U servers do appear in the Marketplace from time to time (there may some listed now, not sure).

Jim

Can you buy chassis only 1U+ servers from Kaleidescape or they only sell complete servers with HDDs?

They only sell them completely full. They have two models available, 18TB and 36TB.

Jim

Which K system? Or are you referring to a typical (IT type) server?

As everyone should be aware by now, K is slowly transitioning away from Premiere. When the current CEO took the reins, a decision was made to continue "some" support in the near term (undefined) for the older Premiere equipment. At some point they decided to make available the 1U+ Server to give Premiere owners the opportunity to move their Premiere content into an upgraded Server. It works for some folks with older OOW Premiere Servers that have a content storage load at or below 36TB. They provided the opportunity to help owners get back into equipment that is newer and under warranty. Those that made the move to the 1U+ did so keep their content safe, accessible, and under warranty.

The 1U+ is another Premiere Server, just like a 1U or 3U, but updated and with larger drives in the 36TB model.

If one already owns a 1U+ server, but has the smaller (6TB or 10TB) drives, is there an option to purchase 12TB replacement drives to get to the 36TB capacity with the existing server? Or, must one exchange the complete 1U+ for a 36TB model, similar to how one must exchange a Terra server to increase capacity?

You cannot purchase new larger drives for the 1U+, you can only purchase replacement drives of the same size should you experience a drive failure. (If under warranty K will send you the same size replacement drive.)

There are no current upgrade programs that would allow the trade up you mentioned. Currently, your only option, besides keeping it, is selling the 18TB you have and purchasing the 36TB model.

That said, if you haven't already done so, you should contact your dealer for their take on it.

Can you confirm 36TB usable space? I was under the impression that the 1U+ could take 4x 10TB drives, one of which is used for Raid, which leaves 30TB of usable space?

KSERVER-1550-04751U+ Movie Server with 18TB of storage
KSERVER-1550-09501U+ Movie Server with 36TB of storage

Excerpt from the dealer price list. It's 36TB because they're 12TB Drives (not 10TB). Three for content (36TB), and 12TB allocated to KRAID.

The official website has the data sheet for a 30TB model. Thanks for clarifying here with the updated information.

The initial release included a 30TB model, but at some point it was decided to use larger drives and they stopped producing the 30TB model in favor of the larger 36TB version. Interestingly, K did not upcharge for the additional 6TB, the price remained the same between the 30TB and the 36TB models. (They probably didn't update the website with the change noted.)
