Hello,

Newbie, trying to decide what movies that I have on 4k disc I should buy in the store? Really looking for great sounding movies that is better than the disc version or even visual. Thoughts? I am in process of re-buying all the Marvel movies.

Audio capabilities are identical. On a few titles, the video bitrates are higher but you may or may not see a difference in real world. This is nothing to be ashamed of. The disc has been the benchmark for decades and the quality is as good as it gets. Matching the disc is praiseworthy already.

The real benefit is the convenience that the disc is behind even from the poorest streaming service. On top of that, you get hand-fully selected scenes you can quickly jump to. On visual movies like Marvel, you can get to your favorite scenes within seconds without getting up to get the disc in the tray. I would buy the ones that are on sale or do disc to digital.

If you are not trying to evaluate 4K vs. 4K, then I would suggest trying some titles that are not available in 4K on disc but are on the Store:

With 4k it is a hit or miss with K, some 4K titles are missing Atmos sound and for those, you better off just buying the 4K Bluray. (if you care about the sound)
If you see in the store that the sound is identical to the Bluray almost 99% of the time the video is the same or better than the 4K Bluray.

This missing Atmos soundtrack issue is subjective. These are mostly remasters. I understand some of us here care to get the most modern soundtrack which are currently Atmos and X. I am sure the primary motive is to have all your speakers active with discreet effects.

I, on the other hand, am a bit more purist and prefer the theatrical soundtracks. For instance, The Terminator was given a mono soundtrack due to budget reasons and for me that’s the way to experience this film, the way it was experienced in cinemas many years ago. In rare cases, films get new audio remasters that are producer/director supervised or approved. They pay respect to their original vision or perhaps updated view after years. I like to pay respect to the artistic visions of the content creators and do my best to experience their content the way intended.

Furthermore, having a 5.1 or even a mono mix doesn’t mean It’s fidelity is any less as long as the audio carrier is lossless.

At the end of the day, these films are for entertainment and what entertains you most is the best for you. I just wanted to share my angle and why I don’t see some missing soundtracks a big deal.
