First up if this is the wrong section, or if something similar exists, I apologize in advance. If so I would request admin/mods to move (or merge) this to the appropriate location.

Since there is such a huge repository of titles to choose from, I wanted to get suggestions from the community for those particular titles where there is a significant difference in file size, quality (audio/PQ) over their physical disc counterparts. Titles which are a no brainer purchase.

I see some information scattered over several threads and was hoping this would consolidate all the relevant info for potential future purchases.

With the advent of Dolby vision on Kscape, physical discs no longer carry bragging rights. Lol. Although there will always be a special place for them (speaking exclusively for myself) in my setup. I have a vast collection of dts:x and auro-3d titles which I will keep permanently along with other exclusive 4k/Blu-ray titles.

I will start off by throwing in 2 titles which I feel are imperative upgrades over the UHD discs:

A) Avengers: Endgame (purchased last night- Avengers 4 movies set).

B) Once upon a time in the West (waiting to do a d2d later tonight).

Keep them coming…

Thanks for that, very useful. I would also appreciate some suggestions from members.

Fwiw, my endgame (100+ gb file) downloaded in 18 mins on the V. That right there (imho) is one of the most impressive/ standout features on the V, apart from DoVi.

You already have this so I thought you might like the spec comparison:

Avengers: Endgame 4K Blu-ray disc is a BD66 (which means it is limited to 66 GB); Kaleidescape 4K download file size is 104.7 GB

You might enjoy some of these…plus hopefully some of them like Lawrence of Arabia will get a DV upgrade…

Planet Earth II 4K Blu-ray release is split between two 66 GB discs; Kaleidescape 4K download file size is 165.3 GB

Blue Planet II 4K Blu-ray release is split between three 66 GB discs; Kaleidescape 4K download file size is 193.2 GB

Lawrence of Arabia 4K Blu-ray has been split between two discs; Kaleidescape 4K download file size is 115.3 GB

Gandhi 4K Blu-ray has been split between two discs; Kaleidescape download file size is 103.4 GB

The Ten Commandments 4K Blu-ray disc is a BD100 (which means it is limited to 100 GB); Kaleidescape 4K download file size is 127.1 GB

Spartacus 4K Blu-ray disc files size is 92 GB; Kaleidescape 4K download file size is 107.4 GB

Ford v Ferrari 4K release comes on a 66 GB disc (which is limited to 66 GB); Kaleidescape 4K download file size is 82 GB

Die Hard 4K Blu-ray BD-66 (which means it is limited to 66 GB); Kaleidescape 4K download file size is 71 GB

Avengers: Infinity War 4K Blu-ray disc comes on a 66 GB disc (which means it is limited to 66 GB); Kaleidescape 4K download file size is 86.3 GB

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker 4K Blu-ray disc comes on a 66 GB disc (which means it is limited to 66 GB); Kaleidescape 4K download file size is 80.8 GB

This is exactly the kind of stuff I’m talking about. This will be so useful going forward. Marked all of them for d2d, except Avengers and Star Wars. I picked up the entire Star Wars set which is on sale currently.

I've got a second...let me crack open my monster spreadsheet that spend an absolutely embarrassing amount of time curating. :p

The Amazing Spider-Man (42.5 Mbps)
West Side Story (41.4 Mbps)
The Emoji Movie (43.7 Mbps)
Joy (43.3 Mbps)
Wild (43.8 Mbps)

Long list but all of the listed titles have the potential to show significant video improvement over the disc version while matching or even improving the audio (none of them have a lesser audio than disc). This isn't all the improved titles either...not even close. These are just the absolute slam dunks.

Keep in mind that KScape advertises 65 Mbps on the video side and my rudimentary math says that's easily the case (napkin math says these are likely closer to 67.0 on average).

One alibi/exception on that point.
31.3 GB for a 98 Min 4K HDR feature w/Atmos, DTSHD 2.0, & DD 5.1 leaves ~35-37 Mbps for video. The disc's video is encoded at 46.7 Mbps. Out of my whole 1300 4K disc library it's the only notable anomaly in the KScape catalog. When I asked KScape about it I got the:
tenor.gif

...that all is well with the title and video bitrate doesn't matter...even though that's part of the marketing and what I invested in a system for. [/rolleyes]

Oh man I’m about to go on a rampage. I smell a Terra on the horizon. Lol.

I second One Upon a Time in the West in video quality. I would add that several of my must-have movies are in 4K on Kaleidescape and not released on disc in 4K. The aforementioned James Bond series before Daniel Craig has a bunch of them. The Day the Earth Stood Still. Office Space is a personal classic. Under the Skin is my favorite modern sci-fi horror film. I was just introduced to Samsara by a member of this forum who created a thread about it, the film is mind blowing. And then there’s the long gap between recent movies and their physical release if ever.

I did not get a d2d offer for Once upon a time in the West. In fact I had to manually enter the barcode as prompted by the system, for it even get cataloged. I don’t know if this was a one off case with me or if others have had success.

On the flip side I was able to get my most coveted Hans Zimmer live in Prague Blu-Ray, as a 4k upgrade. Mad max legacy collection @4.92 per title (except for the 1st one). I also added Bloodshot, Sisu (UHD disc is 5.1 only) and A star is born, while I was at it. All under $5 except for Hans Zimmer.

Under the Skin: So frustrating. 4K full size, not available on disc… missing HDR available on other digital stores. SO close. Why???

Samsara: No longer on Apple TV App (iTunes), but when it was it also was 4K HDR.

Mad Max: MGM pricing plus missing HDR. If K doesn’t get Furiosa Blood and Chrome on The 13th, September’s disc set may be on the table.

I’ve bought all on K and am hoping for future updates. Come on Dolby Vision!

BTW, the Die Hard sequels are in 4K HDR on K (not on disc yet). One of my first “Lessons Learned” on the K Store…

When I bought my K, the Die Hard flicks were distributed by 20th Century, cost $14.99, and would go on sale for $9.99. I had them on my Wishlist, waiting for said sale. Disney took over distribution and immediately raised them to $24.99, with a sale price of $14.99. Now I was waiting for a sale to buy them at what used to be their full price.

Next lesson was movies/series disappearing from the store (and my Wish List) due to changes in rights: The Incredible Hulk (it came back) and Raised by Wolves (gone forever). Others have since disappeared, but…

My advice for new users: Go through the store and build a Wish List of anything you might want. Then, go through the Wish List and say to yourself “How would I feel if that disappeared tomorrow? What if the price doubled?” Buy any title that makes you feel regret.

Just checking out info for avatar last night:

Avatar 4k disc (approx 57gb…kscape 90gb)
Way of water 4k disc (71gb….kscape 112gb)

Note: collector’s edition for both aforementioned titles have same file size on kscape.

Curious about the 4K disc file sizes listed. Both Avatar movies were put onto 100GB UHDs, with extras on accompanying Blu-rays. It seems like a waste to put a 57GB file on a 100GB disc. Beyond that, the Avatar Collector’s Edition has 3 cuts in 4K Dolby Vision via seamless branching.

On K, the normal and collector’s editions of the Avatar movies only differ by Special Features (the movie files are the same*). The additional cuts of Avatar are only available in HD, and are present as Special Features which has some limitations as opposed to being an “Other Edition”.

I highly recommend picking up the Avatar Collector’s Edition disc set to get all the cuts in the highest quality (and of course the 3D Blu-ray if you have a compatible display device).

*It’ll be interesting to see how K handles Dolby Vision on these titles, as this was a distinguishing feature of the Collector’s Edition discs. It would make sense to only update the Collector’s Editions on the K Store, further justifying the second purchase.

I got the stats from Blu-ray.com, which I have historically found to be quite accurate:

I have the collector’s edition and the ultimate collector’s edition plus the bestbuy steels for both Avatar and way of water. I have all bases covered but I was shocked to see the disparity.
