Multiple server (grouping) questions

Calm-One

Well-known member
I am debating between getting a second 1U server and a single 3U server.

I am curious as to how "grouping" two 1U servers works; so a couple of questions to those who have this, or seen this setup already.

How does a player or vault import media to them; does it fill one server up and then the next, to the one server with most free space capacity, etc?

To the above, can the user choose what import goes where (that is what the /installer GUI seems to imply)?

What happens if only one of the 1Us is online; complete content offline, only server specific content is offline?

Any change in management?

Cheers

Grouping multiple Servers is as easy as putting them into the same "Group" utilizing the "Installer" page in the web utility. All Servers in the same group are effectively seen as "one" (meaning all the content on both Servers appears in the OSD). This is all seamless.

Most folks move to a second Server after filling up the first one, so content tends to get imported to the second Server, but content will also be written to the first Server provided enough space is available. Content is not "divided" between Servers.

You can "force" content into a particular Server by disconnecting one of the Servers (either physically by disconnecting from the LAN, or by taking it out of a Group). Again, this assumes the remaining Server has space for the content you wish to import.

You only have access to content for any Server that is "online" (meaning connected to the LAN and operational).

Just to add to what Jim said:

Think of it as servers when grouped behave as a single entity. The system decides onto which server the content imports to. Content is not split between servers, it goes onto one or the other.

can the user choose what import goes where (that is what the /installer GUI seems to imply)?

Yes. As Jim said, just disable the servers that you don't want to import to, leaving only the server on-line that you want to import to. Then the system only has a choice of one where the content goes.

What happens if only one of the 1Us is online; complete content offline, only server specific content is offline?

If a server is off-line, all of the content from that server will be missing from the Music/Movie Libraries. I think K* are working on an update to the KEAOS to make it more obvious via the web user page when a grouped server drops out of the group.

Any change in management?

Obviously each server needs it's own IP.
