Multiple 1U Servers

Hi all, I have a question about running multiple 1U servers. Not sure if anyone can help! I currently have 1U server with 4 2TB drives this leaves me with 6TB usable as 2TB is reserved for RAID. My question is, if I add another 1U Server can if use the 2TB reserved already or do I have to buy two 2 TB drives to get 2TB usable?

I hope this makes sense. Any help appriciated.

I think I understand your question. I believe each server should have its own parity disk. That means the 2TB on the first server will remain reserved for parity (for the first server's data) even if you add a second server. The second server would then need its own parity disk.

Bartok is correct, each server requires its own RAID disc, and the RAID will always be as large as the largest disc in the server, including the RAID disc itself. (i.e. if a 1U had one 2TB disc and three 1TB discs, the RAID value would be 2TB, effectively providing only 3TB of storage).

You mean the PARITY drive, right Jim?

So, a server with a 750gb drive and 2 x 1TB drives will have 1.75TB of storage and a 1TB parity drive. If you put in a 2TB drive, that will be the largest drive and will become the parity drive, giving you 2.75TB of storage.

For 3U servers, the largest drives will be the hot spare drive and then the parity drive.

Sure, you can call it the parity disc. In any case, KRAID requires enough unused disc capacity to cover the largest disc it finds in the system (with the results you stated).

I know you know all this already!:D
