Is an older Kaleidescape K Server 2000 with 11X 300GB Hard Drives worth it?

Gents,

Looking at an older unit. I can buy a K Server 2000 with 11X 300GB Hard Drives....is it worth it?

Then unit may need repair. Can the HD's be upgraded.

I have a 1U Server know, with 2- 750GB drives and 2- 1TB drives. I'm looking at upgrading the drives to 3TB drives (more doable to me than trying for the 4TB drives).

Thoughts?

Jonny

There are several options available. Not wanting to post all, I've sent you a PM.

I think the 5U server max drive size was 750GB. I would drop K a line or check with a dealer for availability.

If you have doubts about the 5U server I would give it a miss. Upgrading the drives on the 1U server would probably be the most cost effective solution going forward.

At present you have (2x750mb) +(2x1TB) giving 2.5TB of usable storage.....lots of storage potential with 2,3 or 4TB drives.

I think retail on 4 tb drives is like 1300 or so each. I would think you are better off getting 4 of the 4 tb drives in a drive upgrade program and you will have 12 tb of space. it would be really expensive and not cost effective to upgrade a 5u sever with 1 tb drives.

Personally, I think it's a fine way to get started if the price is right. The performance won't be different... and Kaleidescape often offers chasis upgrades (can't recall if one is active right now, but possibly) if you decide you love the system (fair bet!) and that you want to add more space. Of course you can also keep the 5U running and simply expand space by someday adding a 3U server as well.

I guess the short answer is that it all comes down to the price you can get it for.
