ICYMI Check your BestBuy Offers

Just throwing this out there.

If you have a Best Buy reward membership and a November-January birthday, check to see if your "Birthday Offer" is active. I believe the window is a few weeks before and after your birthday.

For some K products - notably servers over $10K - the discount has been active.

Every little bit counts, right?

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post. Just trying to be a good elf.

I totally forgot that one can buy K from BestBuy... BUT, please try your best to support your full-fledged independent Kaleidescape dealerships. They do so much for increasingly thin margins in the industry.

Before buying from BestBuy, maybe give your dealer (or pick one of the dealers here on the forum) the chance to make you a compelling offer for what you need. I wouldn't expect them to necessarily match BestBuy's price for obvious reasons, but you might find that they want to work with you and will remind you of the advantages of buying from them vs. the bigbox retailers. Hope you'll at least listen and give them a chance before you make your decision where to buy. If after considering the advantages and the price differences, you decide to buy from Best Buy, then I think that's fine... you'll have made a fully informed choice!

I worked for Best Buy (and Magnolia and others) for many years in the past. I love Best Buy and I am very happy that they are around for many things however Kaleidescape is not one of them. I second Josh here and recommend a dealer who doesn’t need to specialize in a billion different things Best Buy carries (although some of the dealers here are truly experts in many different things).

Like I said, I love Best Buy and don’t intend to turn this into a pros and cons thread. I don’t imply your experience with Best Buy will be bad by any means. I have bought all my equipment from Cinelife here and I don’t believe Best Buy could reach the experience level I got from Jim for my use with Kaleidescape.

Didn't know Best Buy sold KScape, and while I don't plan on buying KScape from them, I was curious about the price and selection they offered for a comparison sake. I came across the Kaleidescape Child Remote: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/kaleidescape-child-remote-white/6470811.p?skuId=6470811

I had never heard of this before. Anyone use it before with their kids? I don't love the idea of giving the kids the Control4 tablet to watch movies on KScape and so have always made them get me to get their movies set up for them, but I could see this being useful. It sounds like you just create a list of movies and it forces them to choose from those.

It will have to be a Best Buy location with Magnolia AV to get you all of the Kscape equipment (except used equipment like any Premiere line product). I am not super up to date with their model anymore. In the past they had Magnolia HT and Magnolia AV. Magnolia AV had full time designers that could order you stuff not listed on their website (or even stuff they don’t normally carry at all). Magnolia HT was limited to their normal scope of work and Best Buy HT employees doubled as the sale specialists. Best But HT employees are non commission and Magnolia AV designers are on commission (more incentive to go beyond and above). Best Buy offers decent amount of training to both but still, your mileage will vary significantly from one sale person to another. Either way, these will be special order items and you won’t be able to walk in and pick one up from the store. Best Buy’s awesome return policy doesn’t apply to Magnolia AV items. They will charge you a restocking fee If you need to return anything.

The child remote control only opens content that you place into the "Child" collection. When they use the remote they will see the "Covers" of that Child collection on screen.

Jim

I have the child's remote and it's great... though my kids are now old enough that we don't really use it. But it's great to give it to kids to pick movies... as soon as they touch any button on that remote, it switches to just showing the "Child" collection movies. Very smart integration of this type of feature by Kaleidescape.

Keep in mind the child remote is an infrared (IR) device meaning you need to be able to point it directly at either the K-player, or an IR repeater (that is connected to the player). Alternatively, you could use the ENTER_CHILD_MODE and LEAVE_CHILD_MODE commands and use child mode with an existing control system.

Yes. Keep in mind, though, that sending "normal" commands will cause the system to exit Child Mode. So you need to use the CHILD_ variants of the navigation keys while in Child Mode.
