FIOS 2 Gig upgrade?

Currently have FIOS 1 Gig service with home phone and DVR service.
FIOS now offers 2 Gig service in my area but with the upgrade they will no longer offer home phone service….
And 2 Gig requires a FIOS tech visit for $150.00 to install new ONT, new router, and new DVR
I can migrate the phone to Vonage for about $15.00/month
FIOS cost for 2 Gig service with DVR but no phone is approx the same as my current bill.
So my question: anyone else upgrade? Is it worth it? (I ordered a Strato V)
What does the new DVR look like?

I have FIOS 1 Gig. I don’t use any other services from FIOS here in the Tampa, FL area. I use Youtube TV so I can’t answer the FIOS DVR question. But I wanted to chime in 😁. My 1 Gig service works fine with my Strato C. The largest movie files take approximately 13 to 15 mins to download. Smaller sized movies take approximately 8 to 11 mins to download. I typically download a movie about an hour before I want to watch it. And when my movie is downloading, I’m typically watching one of my YouTube TV recordings and streaming Real Jazz on SiriusXM across all 13 zones of my whole home Sonos system.

I inquired about the FIOS 2 gig service but I haven’t pulled the trigger and they didn’t mention needing a new ONT or a site visit from a tech. But my house is only 3 years old and I think that I have all of the necessary equipment.

Thanks
The Router for the upgrade is CR1000A or B: looks like it has a 2.5 Gig port for future use
My present 1 Gig Fios router model is G1100
I am still trying to determine new DVR model….

Ahh I see. I don’t use their router. I’m using a Netgear Orbi. The Ethernet from the ONT is connected to the Orbi and the Orbi is connected to a 16 port TB Link unmanaged switch and I also have a 8 port TB link unmanaged switch connected to the 16 port switch.

I use an ASUS router for DHCP reservations etc, plugged into the rented FIOS router/modem
for WiFi I use a Ubiquity Unifi Pro system with 5 wired AP's
several Cisco unmanaged switches

the Verizon appointment for 2 gig service did not go well today: installer tested my feed and said it was not 2 gig: would take 2 weeks to fix.
In the meantime he showed me the new 2 pc DVR: main unit is a black box that can be mounted near ONT or anywhere: it contains the DVR HD.
The streaming box is a tiny thing with a single HDMI out. plus mini USB: no audio outs, and is Bluetooth only except for the IR adapter you plug into the USB port...or the Ethernet adapter: he said they prefer to run the streamer box over WiFi. He could not find either USB adapter and asked me not to look in his truck....he told me he did 10 2 gig upgrades and only had trouble with 2 of them
I am thinking Verizon needs to get more learning time on this, and cancelled the order

Hopefully you meant USB-C or at least Micro-USB. Haven't seen a new device using Mini-USB for like 10 years! ;)

I think my trusty URC MX-880 (still used occasionally) is the last Mini-USB device I own... though i moved to battery-swapping it rather than mini-USB for charging it. Still sometimes need an old Mini-USB cable to make programming changes.

When I get my Unfolded Circle Remote 3, I'll finally get to retire that old MX-880 for good.

I actually prefer mini USB over micro. Micro tends to break/wear out faster.

Of course, everything should be using USB-C at this point.

I just upgraded to 2 gig (frontier) it took basically 20 mins to replace the ONT and get me running. Seamless transition. To the OP, I thought Verizon changed to Frontier. Maybe your region is still with Verizon?

My provider is Verizon
Do you notice any differences with the 2 gig service?

I really didn’t need it, 1gig is more than sufficient for my use case. But there was a special promo wherein for $10 extra (per month) i could upgrade to 2 gig ($40 extra for 5 gig). At that price point I definitely wanted it. Lol

I agree 1 gig is more than enough....I also installed a faster router: was using Asus RT-AC86U: upgraded to Asus RT-AX86U Pro: that seems to improve wired and wireless speeds (I have a Unifi Pro whole house system but the Asus is faster)

Worse, they aren't sharing with the rest of us.
I have been offered to bring my server to another members' house in my state in case I needed to download all over again. S, sharing has been offered, lol. I will say I am working with the local ISP to build out to me for a 1gb connection. It will be costly though.

What download speeds are you getting at K? I recently upgraded to fios 2gig and get 2.3gig speed but can't test on K as Strato V only has 1 gig lan port.

I get 2.5 gig speeds on frontier, Download time on the V is anywhere between 7-10 mins (11-14 for larger files).

I have a Terra Prime SSD at home, and I download at ~2.3Gbps, which is essentially maxing out the 2.5Gbps port on the Terra Prime when you factor in TCP overhead. I have 10Gbps fiber. This is just to say that we're able to deliver content at very high speed.

I of course only have V standalone...with spectrum 1g....according to the Strato V web gui the downloads are between 930-950Mbps. Not complaining. Takes me longer to hit the restroom, make popcorn (love my actual real popcorn machine) and fill my drink than it does to d/l a movie.
