Cost of Importing Currently Owned 4K HD-BluRay Movies into Kaleidescape

Hello Everyone

This is my first post on this Forum and I am excited to be here. I'm a long time home theater junkie and this will be the first time I have joined the Kaleidescape Universe. To date I have been using my Oppo 205 to play 4K HD-BluRay movies.

I have just contracted with a dealer to purchase a Strato V and an 8TB Terra Server. It is my understanding from the dealer that for a certain amount of $$, I will be able to import 4K HD-BluRay movies that I currently own into the Terra Server so that it is added to my library. However, I have tried searching this site and on Google to find out how much it will cost me per movie to import these 4K HD-BluRay movies into my library.

I am sure I will have technical questions for the experts on this Forum when the system arrives and is installed in my house, but for now I am just trying to figure out the cost of ownership. Any help you can give me in answering my question above would be much appreciated.

I look forward to enjoying my time on this Forum.

Welcome!

The "import" process you're referencing is the Disc-2-Digital (D2D) program. This requires an external USB Blu-ray drive which you use to scan your library (K has a short list of recommendations but the actual compatible list is much larger). Some important notes:

1. The program is for Blu-rays, but some have found luck scanning some 4K UHDs. This is not guaranteed, and most disc packages also include a Blu-ray, so it's easiest to just scan that.

2. Regardless of whether you scan Blu-ray or 4K UHD, you will get the same D2D pricing (DVDs cost more to upgrade).

3. D2D pricing is set by the studios, and there are "good" studios and "bad" studios. A good studio, like Warner, Lionsgate, and Universal will offer prices in the $4-5 range for digital purchase. A bad studio, like Disney or MGM will offer a 10-20% discount. So...
...If you scan in Lord of the Rings (Warner), you'll get offers for $4.92 per movie in 4K whether Theatrical and Extended.
...If you scan in Deadpool & Wolverine (Disney) or Rocky (MGM), you'll see prices in the low-mid $20 range.

4. Be aware that many movies are not on K, especially if they're with a non-contracted studio or catalog title. However, it's worth scanning the discs for D2D anyway as you'll get a notification if they're ever added to the store.

In general, I've found it's pointless to even scan Disney/20th/MGM discs (just wait for a sale on these titles). For the other major studios, there's tremendous savings to be had with this program and it's certainly a major benefit to migrating to the K ecosystem.

Wow, that was a really fast response. Thanks for clarifying the process and pricing for me. I'll look into the list of USB BluRay drives and purchase one of them. I think most of my movies are Lionsgate, Sony, Universal and Warner. I may have a couple of MGM movies but I do not think I have any Disney movies. Thanks again for the tips and the kind welcome to this Forum.

I just realized I forgot this part...

5. You can access my-kaleidescape.local via browser to view your History as you're scanning discs. This will let you see whether a disc catalogs successfully or if it requires more data. If it's successful, you should get a digital offer in the K Store (it may take up to an hour). If it's not successful, you can click on the title to provide more details including the UPC code. Offers where you have to identify the UPC manually may take more than a week to appear.

To scan UHD disks look for External LG BP60NB10 Slim Blu-ray drive fw 1.00MK on EBay. I’ve had great success with this method.

Many thanks to all of you for your responses to my questions. I am so amazed that you all responded to my question so quickly. Thank you very much.

Disney is flat $3 off, that’s it.

I know.

Their discounts are more decent than others though. Disney titles are typically priced $24.99 for newish films and $19.99 for the catalog. They almost always discount these $10.00 off when there is a sale. Most other studios are flat $5 off so far.
