Collected Volume Management

Well-known member
So the other day as I was looking at the list of volumes with metadata updates, most of which seemed to be remaining as single volumes, rather than collected into series, or even sets. This brought me back around to a topic I had inquired into before: how can we choose how to display our sets, while K can still be the only ones merrily playing in the database?

Example:
A - All series content (Battlestar Galactica)
B - By season (Battlestar Galactica, Season 2)
C - Collection (Battlestar Galactica, Season 2.0)
D - Disc (Battlestar Galactia, Season 2.0, Disc One)

Hopefully this would be a simple enough solution. On the web interface under the title, give us a little slider (or drop box, or radio box, or etc.) to make the selection. This way we can condense or expand to our taste while all K has to do is chain the profiles together. Granted this would have the most utility for TV series, but it could work similarly for longer-running movie franchises too (A-Star Wars, B-Star Wars Trilogy, C-Star Wars IV, D-Star Wars IV Extras.) From a functional standpoint, it is less about cover-art/movie selection, and more about being able to maximize/right-size the play-all (marathoning) feature.

Collected volumes

Not a BSG fan but...... I think this would be great if you could get the end user ability to create sets.
In the interim I have lent Kaleidescape some 700 disks the majority being sets / series for their loan service so at least this should help in the short term.

That was actually what brought this topic back to mind. I am watching as loaners are coming out as singles, despite submitting full series in their box (and/or with notes on what is the UPC for their box.) Sending off an email to nudge them while they still have the boxes to scan isn't really a problem to me. Even before this, I know there is at least one series that after importing, half of the volumes ended up in the original release grouping, and the second half of the season ended up grouped in the re-release. When previously asked how K's movie guide to be made to make my DVDP database redundant, the shortened version of my answer was that it couldn't. DVDP is for collection management and the KMG is for content management. It just seems like there should be a better (yet still easy) way to organize the information to keep related content together.

Edit: A thought just lingered between the ears too long... on my notes/inventory listing, I circled the UPCs of the individual volumes if that's what I sent. It is possible they took that to mean that was how they should be displayed. So while I still hope there is an improvement to how we can deal with combining related content (Who's afraid of hitting "play all" to a 400+ episode series? Nobody, that's who.) the impetus behind this latest occurrence may have just been a misunderstanding that a quick ping can clear up.
