Can you connect an m500 directly to a 1U server with ethernet?

I need to test the ethernet port on my server. Can I just run a direct cable between it and an unused m500?
 
It should work at the physical layer. Gigabit Ethernet will auto negotiate without the need to use a crossover cable. At the software layer it will probably work but complain about not getting an IP address nor an internet connection.

If both devices are assigned fixed (or static) IP addresses, you can connect them direct to each other via standard Ethernet cable and play content. This is a good way to bypass a switch/router when testing for the potential of a network issue.
