Can we move hard disk slots around?

I noticed in the kaleidescape installation materials, they mention that to prolong drive life, they recommend spacing out the drives so that if there are open slots, they go between hard drives. My kaleidescape has 8 drives in it and they are all next to each other. Can I move them around without having to worry about any errors or trying to rebuild drives or anything?

Yes, no problem. Obviously, shutdown the Server before removing any drives, then you can put them back in any order and in any open slot. Be sure all drives are properly "seated" in their respective slots before powering the Server On.

Also, do not leave "open" spaces between drives, be sure the "blanks" are reinserted as well to fill the in between drive spaces. This is required for proper cabinet ventilation because of air flow through the cabinet.

When you shut down the server make sure you wait a period of time- I forget the recommended amount so Ill call it 2 minutes (probably way too long)- before you remove the drives- this way the drives will stop spinning.
