I just spoke to Kaleidescape's CEO, Cheena Srinivasan, about having to purchase The Last Jedi twice because it is offered in two separate formats.
Kaleidescape, like other retailers, distributes licensed content for sale. The confidential license terms and conditions may restrict retailers from doing certain things, such as offering a no charge upgrade, for example.
Despite incredible efforts involving many parties, Kaleidescape wasn't able to release the 4K HDR version of "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" until today.
Kaleidescape plans to solve this problem by offering a Movie Store credit for the prior purchase (not a refund!) for a future movie purchase. This is an exception for Jedi because it seems like the company was careless and forced customers to incur a second purchase of the same title within a few days when their intentions genuinely seems to be to bring out the best movies in the best formats as soon as possible.
Concerned parties should send an e-mail to support@kaleidescape.com from their Movie Store e-mail account after they have purchased the 4K HDR version.
