Bad Santa Strato V HD Update - Which Version?

Bad Santa has received a Strato V HD Compatibility Update. Previously, this K Store offering had two versions of the movie, the HD Update only includes one. So, which one? I'm hoping someone at K can help. @MikeKobb ?

First thought: Well, Theatrical of course! But, actually, the Theatrical (best) Cut is not available on K. The K Store offering mirrors the old Blu-ray release which included the Director's Cut (darker) and Unrated Cut (just a bunch of extra/elongated stuff).

I'd look to the meta data, but I don't think it got updated. I've currently got the prior release downloaded, so I don't want to update it and lose a version just to see. Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

I'm told it is the theatrical version.
Really??? That would be awesome, as it wasn't part of the original package and is actually my preferred version. However, as it wasn't even a part of the package before, I have doubts.

I would have assumed that if K Store was getting the Theatrical Cut of Bad Santa that it would add it as an "Other Version" and separate store listing rather than replace the prior listing. I assume this is because new assets were needed for compatibility?

But, let's say it's true... I want it. But, I currently have on my Terra the prior HD download which was Director's Cut and Unrated Cut. I assume there's no way for me to download this HD file while also keeping the old file/cuts, right?

This was an example where we had to source a new mezzanine file in order to do the HD update, so yes, it's completely different from the prior one.

The old version with the two other cuts could not be updated to the new format for Strato V, so that's why it's being replaced rather than supplemented. There's no way to keep both.

Ok. Hmm. I guess this is one of the use cases where we're seeing a permanent loss/change.

My initial thought is that I'd have rather seen a delisting of the prior title(s) and the addition of a new listing. Nobody would be able to buy the prior versions anymore, but if you previously purchased them and still had compatible equipment, you'd be able to enjoy them. But, I guess the goal is for K to no longer have any V incompatible files on their servers, right? So, delisted titles are being updated too, right? And that means the above isn't an option long term.

I'm still a bit conflicted... If we're starting from scratch and someone tells me K can get only a single version of Bad Santa, I'd pick Theatrical. But, I actually spent money and purchased a package of Director's Cut and Unrated Cut which is effectively being taken away and replaced. All three cuts are currently available on other digital stores, and in fact have been re-released due to distribution rights changes. Which means K had to make a decision here, and this is what they picked.

I guess the next step would be to update to Theatrical and then submit requests for the other cuts to movies@kaleidescape.com. However, I've probably got a couple hundred movies I'd prioritize over these, so...

It is what it is. And, I'll think we'll be seeing more of this as time goes on. Growing pains.

I am assuming that if someone specifically purchased the alternative cuts those versions are still available in the old format for playback on the C?

Only if you previously downloaded them (they were on your server before this last weekend) and you do not update the title.

Sorry if I am being a bit thick but if you don't update them (And this is made very clear before you do) they will still be available to download if you purchased them in the past but either didn't download them, downloaded and deleted them or downloaded them and delete them at some future point in time without updating them?

The "old" version(s) no longer exist on the K servers...
(I don't know that they're not on the server as fact; I'm speaking from an effective end-user perspective.)

If you already have them downloaded, and do not update them, you get to keep them.

If you update the file, there is no way to get back the prior incompatible versions.*

If you purchased the prior versions and did not download them previously, they are no longer available to you.

If you purchased the prior versions and did download them, but delete them at some point for whatever reason, you will not be able to re-download them.

*It is not clear what is happening for the update. As a user you would simply be told there is a HD Compatibility Update. You would have to look at the details page on your Terra, compare it to the details on the K Store, and see that you previously had two features and now there is only one. It's also not clear which one is now present, hence my post. If you simply accepted the update, K would download the new title (theatrical) and delete the prior (director's and unrated), forever removing your access to the prior versions.

Yes, as it stands now, LoveCinema's summary above is accurate. This is a very unusual case. When it was originally added to the store, rights were for the one movie version offered which did include multiple cuts as extra features. Now those cuts are sold separately from a new licensor and are not available as extra features. The single version offered today is the theatrical version.
