I’m option 3. I keep buying discs because I like seeing them in a physical space. I realize this is a bit wasteful, and was wondering how many folks here are in the same camp. I’m pretty sure about a couple of you, and you know who you are! In my defense my version of buying discs and movies in general is limited to genuine favorites. Of course, I have a lot of favorites. This is my favorite medium!

Yes, only for things not on K: ST TMP directors cut 4k, scream 3 4k, riddick 4k movies, Halloween movies 4k, Conan 4k, elm street 4k, etc etc are a few off top of my head

That is probably the most reasonable position. I am trying to get my brain to get into that mode.

K-scape has a great inventory of movies, however, so many of them are missing Atmos or DTS:X, which many of the discs have. So I'm stuck keeping many of my previously purchased discs as well as certain newer ones. I really enjoy Kscape, but I think they should proactively pursue the superior audio files from the studios.

Still buy lots of boutique discs. Also buy discs for moves on K that don't have the special features. Love me some bonus features and director's commentaries!

Oh that’s a great point! I had forgotten about that. I guess maybe my subconscious was tracking that since the dupe discs I still buy have a lot of extras on them. I can feel better about my behavior now!

Too many older good movies movies improved by Criterion, etc are not on K-Scape. Thus, disc purchases has continued for me.

I constantly TRY to not be a physical collector, and have been through a number of purges. The last one was to go mostly digital, but then I got a theater. I thought with K I'd leave physical behind me, but realized how limited the K Store is. My current phase is to only buy "Better on Disc" and keep them in binders near the player.

Now, some would say I'm not TRYING very hard, and would point out the roughly 30 pre-orders I have in place between now and the end of the year. These people would have a point.

I've been stubborn and quit (for the most part) buying discs...
When I moved to the Kaleidescape, one of the reasons was that I didn't want to waste valuable storage space for physical media. I've gotten rid of 99% of my discs, and I avoid buying more at all costs. Unless it's something not available on K and I know I'll watch it more than once, I'd rather rent and watch via iTunes than have to identify and dedicate space for more discs.

I did for the first year or so, but now I think it's just gotten to the point that K has made me lazy and I'd rather just turn it on and doom scroll through the movie menus than to actually get up and put a disc in. About sold most of my physical collection now and the only discs I've bought lately are the high fidelity blu-ray audio discs.

As someone else mentioned, the other thing for me is I simply don't have the space to be a disk collector. Even if I had the space, I still wouldn't buy a 4k disk unless it's a situation where K is never going to get the movie I want to watch. And so far, I haven't really encountered that situation.

I finally caved a couple weeks ago and bought the Point Break 4K. Now I'm being told I need to upgrade my disc player to one with Dolby Vision (I have the original Sony UHD) and use LLDV on my Lumagen because the HDR10 layer on the Point Break disc sucks. Which, frankly, it kinda does. We watched it once and even though it's one of my favorite movies, next time we watch we'll just watch the HD version on Kaleidescape because the HDR10 layer is indistinguishable unless you're pixel peeping, which I don't intend to do. And I'm not buying a new player for one movie.

I have a disc vault that is used to watch a handful of concert discs that have never arrived on K, but otherwise I never access discs, and cannot recall purchasing a new disc in years.

In general, if a title I want to watch is not available on K, I try finding it on a streaming service where I hope to tolerate a subpar experience ... and quite frankly, depending on the service (AppleTV, Disney, Max), some presentations are actually pretty tolerable.

I'd say for me that I'm just too busy with 2 kids with constant sports activities to worry about collecting much anymore. I'm glad to say this has helped my perspective on things :)

I want to buy discs but all the ones I care for are OOP and massively overpriced.

For instance, I would love to buy the Species III/ Species: The Awakening Blu-ray Double Feature to complete my Species collection but not for $95.

In additions, most of the discs I care for turn out not video bookmarked. That’s another $10 per disc plus S&H. Beyond the cost, it is another layer of inconvenience.
