I will update post #1 when I have time.

John

Post #1 has been updated. Here are some additional comments since we are at the end of a year.

O/A total as of the end of CY2021 is now 561.

I added in the calculation of % of 4K Titles not available on disc and it is now closing in on 40% - the highest I have seem. I looked back to initial numbers I calculated back in October 2019 and it was 28.7%. So the total percentage has increased 10% points over the last two years and based on historic trends it is going to continue to increase.

Total Titles to-date: 561
Total 4K Titles on Store (including premium rentals & pre-orders): 1450
Percent of 4K Titles on Store not available on Disc: 38.7%

All of the 561 titles are listed in the attachment in the 1st post and has been updated through 31 December 2021.

John

I should add that I welcome any corrections to the list. I have tried to be very thorough in checking the titles as I add them but I could have missed something.

The list of titles that are coming out on disc that are not on K (in 4K) is starting to build momentum. This goes back to my post from a couple months ago about seeing a lot more catalog titles being released by boutique labels (Kino, Arrow, Criterion, etc), that are not supported by K. They are also falling behind on Sony catalog 4K titles and even some Warner. Couple this with the lack of immersive audio mixes we see from a lot of titles and it starts getting a bit troubling.

Let's just look at the last 3 months:

Krampus
Hard Target
The Red Shoes
Dune (original)
Donnie Darko
Robot Carnival
Weathering With You
The Great Escape
Juice
Deep Red
Citizen Kane
The Toolbox Murders
Akira
The Piano
Dead Heat
Lamb
The Lover
Madman
Some Like it Hot
Dracula Sucks
Looper
The Howling
Alligator
The Green Mile
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

There are quite a few big titles in there. From the studio support that K does have, I would have expected at least 6 of these titles to be available in the store already.

I'm hoping to see an uptick in these releases too given I just double-downed on my K hardware.

"Weathering With You" and "Akira" would be really nice, IMO. I'd like to see more anime/animation from the likes of GKIDS, Shout Factory, and Sony in the store.

K really needs to land Criterion in 2022. I want the Bruce Lee films from the physical release combo, and the Godzilla films too.

not only these titles are missing in 4K download, the genres they belong to, like obscure horror, sci-fi and anime are underrepresented in the store in my opinion.

I wonder if your description provides some background to why they're not available - "obscure ....... (enter genre)" 🤨😜

Thanks @KDeering!

This is a great list thanks for posting. I took your list and added in the distributor and also whether it is available on digital (I used Vudu only to save time). Here is your list with the added information:

Krampus - Shout Factory; Vudu - no
Hard Target - Kino Lorber; Vudu - no
The Red Shoes - Criterion; Vudu - no
Dune (original) - Arrow; Vudu - no
Donnie Darko - Arrow; Vudu - no
Robot Carnival - Discotek Media; Vudu - no
Weathering With You - Shout Factory; Vudu - no
The Great Escape - Kino Lorber (1/11/22); Vudu - Yes (MGM)
Juice - Paramount; Vudu - yes (Paramount)
Deep Red - Arrow; Vudu - no
Citizen Kane - Criterion; Vudu - yes (Warner Bros.)
The Toolbox Murders - Blue Underground; Vudu - no
Akira - FUNimation; Vudu - no
The Piano - Criterion; Vudu - no
Dead Heat - Vinegar Syndrome; Vudu - no
Lamb - “A24 Shop Exclusive”; Vudu - no (What is “A24 Shop Exclusive”?)
The Lover - MPI Media; Vudu - no
Madman - Vinegar Syndrome; Vudu - no
Some Like it Hot - Kino Lorber; Vudu - no
Dracula Sucks - Vinegar Syndome; Vudu - no - title not available
Looper - Sony (2/15/22 newly released); Vudu - 4K SDR? (Available in Store in UHD)
The Howling - Shout Factory (2/15/22 newly released); Vudu - no (not available)
Alligator - Shout Factory (2/22/22 newly released); Vudu - no
The Green Mile - Warner Bros. (2/15/22 newly released); Vudu - yes (Warner Bros.)
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - Kino Lorber (2/22/22 newly released); Vudu - no

Of the list, only 5 are available on digital and all from the original studio. All of the others are not available yet. To me this raises a couple of questions:

Do the distributors that create the 4K versions get a period of exclusivity time period before the digital versions are made available? And/Or, Do the original studios want to do their own 4K versions to release on digital?

I agree that this (so far small) group of titles being released on disc in 4K is slightly concerning - especially Criterion and Arrow which are not part of the Store. I also agree on the concern on some missing 4K Sony titles. I have been waiting for a while for some of these to show up.

It will be interesting to watch what happens going forward.

John

I think part of the problem with some labels - like Criterion - is they don't own the films they release. Criterion is a boutique distributor. They license all of their films from other studios. I don't think K can make a deal with Criterion. I think this is also true of Kino Lorber's new 4K releases (of fantastic titles.) "Some Like It Hot," "The Apartment," "Touch of Evil," the whole "Man With No Name" trilogy - these are no doubt owned by someone else Kino Lorber is distributing the 4K discs. K has a deal with Kino Lorber, but so far these titles have not made it to the platform. K would likely need to get license from the original studios. I hope they do.

Hi Kris,

I track 4K movies that ARE on the Store but are not on disc. I don’t track titles that are NOT on the Store but are on Disc - I just don’t have the time to do this exercise. So I don’t track any distributors that are not on the Store and I don’t track the new Arrow, Shout Factory and Kino Lorber titles that have been coming out on Disc only and are not available in 4K in digital format yet.

I DO think it would be good if someone did this as there are starting to moms and more titles that fall into this category.

Let me also go through your list from March and see if I missed anything. There are a couple that are on you lost that I need to verify whether they are on my posted attachment of the list of movies. This may take a couple of days to get through.

John

ETA: Here is the link to the list of March additions plus the Added on Disc list in post #133 above:

I think there was a dedicated thread to 4k-shiny-not-store, it just hasn't been as active. Then again, from lack of activity, it may just be easier to keep it in the Hole thread.

I don't think contacting Criterion will do anything at all. Criterion is a distributor - much like Kaleidescape is. They license titles to distribute; they don't own any of the titles. It's up to the copyright holder to allow Kaleidescape to also distribute these 4K transfers. Look at "Uncut Gems." Criterion released it in 4K (their first 4K release.) Soon after A24 - which owns the movie - allowed Kaleidescape to have it. Arrow and Kino Lorber are also simply distributing 4K discs. I don't know how active Kaleidescape people are at reaching out to these copyright holders - almost all of which distribute films via K - and saying "Hey give us these titles!" Or if K just sits around and waits to see what falls off the truck. It's frankly inexplicable that so many 4K releases of major catalog titles are being released on disc, but not on K. Frankly, how is something like "The Age of Innocence" still in SD on K, when apparently Scorsese himself is a big fan of Kaleidescape. I'm not sensing much urgency from K folks.

What is your list of discs based on? Here is what I have for disc releases in 4K for Mar/Apr:

* Not available on K

I inserted comments above. Also, here is a summary of what I track:

1. As my list says, I only track 4K titles on the Store and not on disc. I don’t track titles on Disc and not on the Store. I just don’t have time to do both. I would welcome someone doing this.
2. I don’t track Studios/Distributors that are not on the Store (Vinegar Syndrome, Criterion, etc.)
3. I do track releases from Arrow/Shout Factory/Kino Lorber but it will only affect my list if a title is added on 4K disc that is already on my list. If it is, I remove it and adjust the count.

I hope this helps and welcome any feedback or checking of my work. If any errors are found and verified, I will up date my posts/lists (Post #133 has been updated with “Downton Abbey“ added on Disc and removed from the count).

John

I have to retract my statement that I had missed removing “Downton Abbey” from the count. It was removed and already listed as added on Disc.
