3 free movie downloads until 2013

Hello,

First of all, the invitation with four free movie downloads if you create an account (or one free movie download for creating an account plus three more added on 12/25) was sent to all of the email addresses we have on file for customers that we believe are in the USA based on information provided at registration time. If you didn't receive it, it's possible that:
- we don't have your current email address on file
- you unsubscribed to our communications at some point in the past
- the address you have on file with us is not in the USA
- some form of anti-spam technology filtered the message (it did offer something for FREE, albeit not viagra)

If you have a Kaleidescape System and are located in the USA, you can register it and receive four free movies (the credits expire at the end of 12/31, so you have three days left). The process is:

1. Select the SETTINGS tab in the browser interface.
2. Click Register System at the bottom of the page.
3. In the window that appears, enter the email address for the account and click OK.
4. In the second window that appears, click OK. The registration process may restart the system and interrupt playback.
5. Kaleidescape will send an email message to the address provided. The account owner must complete registration by clicking a custom link in that email message and following the instructions provided.

Peter - you are certainly correct that we could improve the message that we present for visitors in geographies that we haven't launched in. We don't believe that Canada is a third-world country (and while I don't personally think the current message quite suggests THAT you clearly took it that way, and others may as well!)

Your suggestion about maintaining a catalog of your movies is right in line with our strategy. You'll see in this overview video that we flag titles you already own, which is a step in that direction:

MikeG - I am not sure why you only received 3 movie credits. Please send me a PM with the email address used to create your account and we'll add another to make that right. We did not intentionally short you a credit!

Regarding download speeds - I believe many people have noticed this, but just to be clear you can set a limit on the Downloads page of the Kaleidescape Store website. At this point, you should get close to your ISP's effective bandwidth, up to about 60 Mbps, if you set the limit to 100 Mbps (which means that we will effectively not constrain it.) If not, we'd like to hear about it via email to BETA at KALEIDESCAPE dot COM. If you are getting around 15 Mbps, it's possible that you've left the setting at its default (which I believe is 15 Mbps.)

Andrej770 - As you likely know, the injunction in the DVD CCA case has been stayed pending our appeal. But you can read what that injunction says here:

http://www.kaleidescape.com/files/legal/DVDCCA-vs-Kaleidescape-Injunction-Order-20120308.pdf

If the injunction were to go into effect, it would impact the ability of systems sold after the effective date to import and play DVDs. There would be no impact to the behavior for Blu-ray Discs, CDs, or downloaded movies. There would also be no impact to the behavior for DVDs on systems already sold.

Best wishes for a great 2013 everyone.

Thanks for posting Tom!

Thanks Tom, we appreciate you taking the time to stay in touch through the forum. Believe us, its appreciated. Thanks also for the link. I had not seen it because if you click on the learn more about the store link on the Kaleidescape site all you get back is 'sorry you are from an unsupported territory' . . . . . . . But it certainly does look great!

Great and very thorough response Tom, thanks for addressing many of the comments/questions here on the forum.

I just wanted to say thanks to Tom for his very informative responses. Although I am not much of a poster, I do watch this forum and find the content useful.

I also wanted to share my experience with the K-Store. I have used up my four credits - Thanks Kaleidescape! Download times varied between 20 and 26 minutes per download at a rate of between 36.3 and 42.5 Mbps. My wife and I were using the internet during at least some portion of most of these downloads, which may contribute to some speed degradation. This data sample size is 6 downloads. One movie had 3 downloads to it (Gone with the Wind - apparently a "Long-Winded" set of downloads). Anyway, just my experience to date that I thought I would share as fyi.

I do forward to HD content and possibly music content...?

Take care,
Paul

Thanks Tom

I think I received my four movies. The first when I initially registered; three on the morning of the 25th from St Nick.

It was just funny to me that I also received the email to register minutes apart from the Xmas gift.

I other words....I think we're square!

Thanks Tom for your reassurance. The fact that you took the time out to address this is appreciated.

FEATURE REQUEST: Please consider putting an option in that gives us owners the ability to set our systems to "auto-update" or not.

I can't see how that would present any problem for K except taking away a wee bit of control over our systems and leaving the timing of the update in the trusty hands of those that actually bought and use the product. Our systems would still get updated, eventually, but at our pace, with our consent and at our discretion. For now, I unblocked K's IPs and ports in my firewall, got the update, restarted, then blocked the IP's and ports again until next time. (sigh) Just doesn't seem all that should be necessary in 2012 (almost 2013) especially seeing all the other levels of technology and innovation you have shown in all your products. But oh well; it is what it is! Great product otherwise though.

Actually it could be a problem depending on what the licensing agreements say- they may need to be able to ensure any device getting their service is compliant.

That would make sense if they also forced the server to reboot so it would remain "compliant" after a update and also made it a condition of continued use. But because they don't want to interrupt your "experience" with a random reboot and you not be notified (and consent) ahead of time, they wouldn't force a reboot, unless you requested some sort of troubleshooting (which would be based upon some trouble ticket). What that means is, until the system is rebooted, to effectuate the new update - and in your scenario, remain compliant, the system remains at the old OS level and out of "compliance" in your scenario. If their licensing agreement required "compliant" machines, they would be failing to do that. This isn't a licensing agreement issue; I review 100's of those for our systems from vendors around the world. This is a K "I wanna be in control" issue. It is what it is though. :)

Just my .03 cents (lol)

Jerry I think you win the toss. If this was just a debate over Windows home servers I would side with the community that argued the right to prevent unauthorized updates without my permission. The issue here with Kaleidescape technology however is different. We bought hardware and associated software which came with a special license provision that similar hardware does not and that is the right to copy and store copyright material. I suspect that Kaleidescape has to have some method of verification of that closed environment or they would be in violation. I have accepted that so that I can securely and legally store movies and music on the server.

I really do think this is a unique situation that is very very different from the typical consumer device with respect to forced updates.

Thanks Peter. I'm actually sympathetic to the community point of view, but even with that sympathy, we can't ignore reality. I wouldn't be surprised to find out the fine print that comes along with Windows or Mac OS or whatever OS says something similar actually.

In the mean time, Id also like to say thank you to Tom and the team at Kaleidescape- well done!

So, I watched my first downloaded movie and it worked flawlessly... Once they get the BlueRay feature working, this is going to be fantastic... I would also like to express my thanks to Tom & "K" for this Christmas gift...

Matt

As frustrating as it is, I guess they have to get it going in one place first and then they can get it going elsewhere. I think you could look at it like its a few steps closer to you now. I cannot wait for BR content. I am very impressed so far.
