Premium memberships can be purchased for as little as $10... a very reasonable fee in order to sell equipment here, far lower than the seller's fee would be on eBay or Audiogon or other sites. Our site doesn't sell ads or sell user's information. This small fee is the only source of funds for the site to offset the costs it takes to run the forum.

Hi

I am selling a 1U server, with 2x 2TB disks (and two empty slots with blanking plates).

The two disks are under warranty until 30th July 2013 (and were new before that, so you can extend the disks warranties quite a bit).

Content is just the 6 standard items supplied with a new server. It has the movies and music licence (I don't know if all servers have the music licence)

It will be shipped in a proper kaleidescape box (that I have just bought at a silly price) as that is what Kaleidescape recommend/require.

As you can guess, I bought a set of new 2TB disks in July 2011 but then never ended up putting the 1U server into action.

The new price in UK incl our 20% VAT of a server with 4x 2TB disks is ?9234. 2x 2TB disks cost ?1800 so I guess new this is worth ?7434

Anyway, its for sale for ?5K or near offer.

Thanks

Richard

Information please

Hi , I'm new to the forum and have just started learning about this systmn
Hence my questions will be uneducated

Is this a complete systmn that I can start with right away or do I need something else I have good speakers , good quality tv and that's it

Hi Verneyboy

You also need a "player" with a DVD reading drive, for playback and for recording more movies on the server. You can have many players, in different rooms so people can watch different things (or you can pause a movie in one room, change rooms and continue where you left of whilst the kids then watch their movie in the room you just left. Of course you can pause and come back to another player sometime later and resume the film - even if you watched something different in-between.

All movies are held and played back from the server's hard disks via ethernet network. However, if you store Bluray disks you still need something called a vault, which securely stores the Bluray (and never uses it, it just complies with the blu-ray licence that says the disk has to be in the system). Of course you can play a movie direct from the DVD drive on the player that is connected to your TV.

There are 3 kinds of players generally available, and 2 types come with or without a disk reading drive (i.e DVD drive or Bluray drive). The ones with disk reading drive are the width of a standard 19" rack and 1 standard unit (about an inch) high. The ones without are "mini players" and nice and small.

a) Standard Def DVD player and reader (latest version of that was the KPLAYER-5000 which is still available refurbished from Kaleidescape)
b) 1080P upscaling DVD player/reader (KPLAYER-6000) and player only (KPLAYER-300, or "mini player). The 6000 is still available, the 300 not.
c) Blu-ray player/reader (M500) and Bluray player only (M300)

I'd recommend at a minimum the KPLAYER300/KPLAYER6000 as the upscaling is very very good and enhances the DVD experience greatly.

There is one system I havent mentoned, which is the Cinema 1, which has 4 (smallish) disks in and a player and a reader. Its a starter system and quite nice, but you'll fill it up quickly.

The other thing you need to know as you are not in DVD region 1, is that once the DVD movie is on the server, it can be played back on any player. However, the DVD drives are set to a single region (you can change that region 3-4 times), and will only read from that region. I have 2 reading drives on my system, one in Region 1 and one in Region 2. Bluray regions are a bit more difficult as the drive Bluray Zone can't be changed, and you need a player in the correct Zone somewhere in the system to play back that Zone - thus I have some in Zone A and some in Zone B.

I have a spare KPLAYER300, and possibly a 6000 although someone else has first refusal on the 6000.

Hi Richard

Thankyou for you reply very helpful , ill digest it and see what to buy were
I'm trying to buy it second hand obviously to keep costs down
It obviously a great systmn - I'm just beginning but want to buy what will
Play blu ray now and good gear so I'm not trying to upgrade in to shorter
Period. Thankyou for the info on correct region that could have been disastrous

Excellent, you are going through the exact same process as I did. The 1U server is good for Blu-Ray. If you fill it up, you either swop out the disks for larger ones (one at a time), or you can just stack the servers (and the system regards them all as 1 as far as the user is concerned), or Kscape, if you buy 4 new drives, will send you a new (refurb) server with the drives and a warranty, and you duplicate the content and return the old server with the smaller drives.

I run with a M500-B (i.e the Blu ray player with the Blu-ray drive in Zone B as thats where I am and occasionally I want to play a disk in the tray) and a M300-A. This means I can read in any region bluray disk (all bluray players will scan in any Zone bluray disk), and play back A and B anywhere. I think you are in Zone C.

Region Australia

Hi Richard

According to the web we are region 4 so I gather from what your saying that's what I have to buy to make kscape work in my situation

Regards vern

Verneyboy. You are in DVD region 4, that can be changed on kaleidescape players (upto 4 times). If you have a need to import other region disks (such as USA, 1) then you will need a reader (player with a drive!) in that region. (I have a player with DVD drive set to region 1 for just that purpose)

You are in Bluray Zone B. So you need a Zone B M300 or M500 in your system (I would suggest the M500 as you are probably more likely to play a local disk in the M500's disk drive). I assume you probably have some Zone A (USA) Bluray's too, which means having a Zone A M300/M500 somewhere. The Bluray players regions can not be changed. Ever.
