Needed or Wanted changes to carry Kaleidescape forward

This is one of the main reasons I never bought in.

    Plex?

That is really cool! I was checking it out on their website and it looks great. It is also reasonably priced. I wonder if their ripper is available separately.

    Plex?

All you need for a server is a Shield and a big external hard drive or two.

    Plex?

I agree. I've played around with KODI quit a bit lately because of the codec support. It is a pain to set up, less intuitive to use and you have to set up every individual client. I'm personally willing to take a couple minor hits on the codec support side, but I'm running a respectable $15,000...

    Plex?

My Plex server is a QNAP TS-853 Pro 8-Bay NAS with a quad-core 2.0Ghz Celeron and 8GB DDR3. I'm running eight 4TB HGST NAS drives in RAID 6 for a total of about 21.5TB of usable storage. I can handle a limited amount of transcoding, but not enough to transcode from 1:1 Blu-Ray rips. That's why I...

    Plex?

If you use a Shield or PHT, HD audio just works. Plex can also transcode to lossy for devices that do not support lossless. My understanding is that Plex can now transcode Video_TS to H264 on the fly, but I would personally rather convert it once and not put the load on the box. Cinavia is a...

    Plex?

For those of you who are considering Plex as your alternative: Pros: The user experience is very good and always improving, because features are added on a regular basis and bugs tend to get fixed rather quickly. There are clients for practically every device known to man and the server can...

    Plex?

The Plex Optimizer makes this a LOT easier. Once you do the raw 1:1 Blu-Ray rip, you can tell Plex to make copies of the film optimized for different things. I generally just use the Universal TV 12 Mbps setting, which gives you an H264 MP4 file with DD or DTS Pass-thru at an average bit-rate of...

    Plex?

Forced subs are the ones that pop up when someone in the movie speaks a foreign language, like a scene in a spy movie where the hero infiltrates the Russian embassy. That kind of thing. The issue is that they are handled three ways. Some discs just burn them into the image by default. They do...

    Plex?

The biggest headache is forced subtitles. The rest is pretty easy. Open MakeMKV, pop in a disc, click "open disc", select the main title with the sountracks and subtitles you want, name it and click Make MKV. Done, unless you have forced subs.

    Plex?

I have the same gripe with Plex and I really wish there were a way to integrate my Plex titles with my UV/DMA titles. I was very aggressive with Disc-to-Digital because of cost. It is hard to say no to getting a near Blu-Ray quality 1080p copy of something you have an DVD for $2.50. I also made...

    Plex?

I would argue that UV/DMA through Vudu is a better option than Apple for a couple reasons. The quality is basically the same between the two, so that does not play into it. 1) Apple works with Apple, but only Apple. Vudu works on most set top boxes, smart TVs and mobile devices as well as...

    Plex?

Full quality does not mean ISO. ISO has nothing to do with quality at all. I personally don't want to deal with menus and such. All I want is the movie itself. I can take the raw movie and put it in an mkv container without compressing it or altering it in any way. That is what I mean by 1:1...

    Plex?

Plex can now stream full 1:1 Blu-Ray rips with DTS HD-MA and Dolby TrueHD pass-thru to the NVidia Shield TV. It also has the ability to generate "optimized" (compressed) files for use on other devices. Plex will then choose the appropriate version of the file to play based on the client, so you...

Capacity of Terra Vs. 3U with 6TB Drives

Based on an average movie size of 35GB, a 6TB drive should be able to hold about 170 movies. My understanding is that the Terra does not use RAID, though you will lose a small amount to formatting. I would expect the 600 movie estimate to be about right if you throw in some extras and some...

    Encore Line FAQ from K

I'm curious about whether there will be an upgrade path for UV copies to 4k as well.

Question from Kaleidescape: What's your Internet speed?

I am currently at 75Mbps symmetrical, but will likely upgrade to 100Mbps when my contract comes up in the spring. Service up to 300Mbps is available, but it is just too expensive to go over 100.

    Encore Line FAQ from K

One of the things holding me back is that I have a really bit UV library and do not have anywhere near the budget required to store the movies I already have ($17k, minimum). What I am toying with is starting out with just one Strato and swapping movies in and out based on what I am likely to...

    Encore Line FAQ from K

If I have two 6TB Strato players, can I download a completely different subset of my UV library to each player and then watch any title on either player? I assume that counts as one downloaded copy, not two? If I have a Terra server, how does the UV download limit come into play?
