Kaleidescape Continues to Innovate with Terra Prime 96TB Movie Server
Kaleidescape’s largest server is a movie collector’s dream

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA – April 2, 2024 – Kaleidescape, maker of the ultimate movie platform, today announced its largest capacity server – the new Terra Prime 96 terabyte (TB) movie server.
Kaleidescape’s Ultimate 4K System now includes two Terra Prime 96TB movie servers loaded with every 4K title available on the Kaleidescape movie store at the time of shipment.
Additionally, the company announced its Terra Prime 72TB movie server. The Terra Prime 96TB and 72TB servers replace the 88TB server.
“Kaleidescape continues to innovate, delivering hardware improvements and frequent automatic software updates, to enrich customers’ movie-watching experience,” said Tayloe Stansbury, chairman & CEO of Kaleidescape. “These new servers enable customers to build robust libraries encompassing movies, TV series, and concerts with lossless audio and full reference video.”
Terra Prime features an all-new board design with faster processing power and faster network, for faster movie downloads and overall system performance. Terra Prime is the only dedicated movie server with 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet. And Terra Prime servers are equipped with enterprise-class disk drives, the same drives chosen by data centers for performance and reliability.
Kaleidescape also offers a Disc-to-Digital program, to assist customers with transitioning their DVD and Blu-ray disc collections to digital on Kaleidescape. This provides an opportunity for disc collectors to enjoy the benefits of the Kaleidescape ecosystem without having to repurchase every movie at full price.

Kaleidescape Terra Prime HDD Movie Servers
Terra Prime HDD is a next-generation high-capacity movie server. It can download a Kaleidescape high-bitrate 4K movie in as little as eight minutes and serves up to five simultaneous playback zones (compact) or up to 10 simultaneous playback zones (full-size).
The full-size Terra Prime HDD 96TB stores approximately 1,600 Kaleidescape high-bitrate 4K movies, the 72TB stores roughly 1,200 Kaleidescape fidelity 4K movies, and the 48TB stores approximately 800 Kaleidescape fidelity 4K movies.
The compact Terra Prime HDD 22TB stores approximately 350 Kaleidescape fidelity 4K movies and the 8TB stores roughly 130 Kaleidescape high-bitrate 4K movies.

Kaleidescape Terra Prime SSD Movie Servers
Kaleidescape also offers Terra Prime Solid-State (SSD) models in 31TB and 8TB, ideal for marine and state-of-the-art installations that are enabled with 2.5 gigabit Ethernet or higher and require multiple playback zones.

Any news regarding list prices?

MSRP is:
Terra Prime 72TB is at $20,995
Terra Prime 96TB is at $26,995

If someone is creating a new system with either of those Servers and adds two Strato-C players to the order, K provides a $1500 Store credit.

If anyone wants to unload their old and outdated 88tb Terra Prime units to a good home I'll do my best to take care of it and give it a loving home. :)
Just because officially it's not a race to see who can fill a 96T server fastest doesn't mean folks should cheat and count trade-up-server content.

Is that supposed to be 32T & 8T or is there some weird storage redundancy voodoo going on?

The 31TB is correct, not sure how the SSD storage is allocated, but that's the net storage available to the owner.

The SSDs that they use are 7.68TB, so the sizes are actually 7.68TB and 30.72TB, which is rounded to 8TB and 31TB.

trying to decide if should get an additional 22TB to existing 2 22TB or go with a full 72TB to make it future proof. Any identified downsides of having 3 compact terras versus just one large 72 or 96 unit?

One obvious advantage for me having more than one box is that if a box fails I can still watch all of my movies. As this happened, the decision has already been endorsed for me because replacing the faulty box wasn’t an overnight affair. As long as you have 2 boxes that is covered though and so your question still has merit for me. Do I replace to upgrade or add. I would think for most people the space and additional power would lean towards a 2 box solution (allowing for my point above) being ideal but interested to see what people say.

Thanks for that insight. After some more thought I've essentially narrowing it down to two options that should last a good while:
Option 1:
  • Keep the 2 Compact 22TB Terra's I have - maxed out now almost (room for 20 4K HDR titles left)
  • Buy a 48TB Terra
  • Total of 92TB
Option 2:
  • Sell one of the Compact 22TB Terra's
  • Buy a 72TB Terra (selling 22TB unit would be to offset cost of the 72TB)
  • Total of either 94TB
Based upon my current available space and wish list of titles I don't foresee maxing space for at least 2-3 years.

As you mentioned, interested in getting some additional viewpoints as well since install of whatever option picked will happen this summer.

If it was me I would go with option 2 but then I would never get around to selling the 22Tb and it would sit in a cupboard with the previous 3 cinema room setups I have in there already....... projectors/amps and speakers. Doh!

Could always sell first. Some risk of single point of failure, depending on how long it takes to get the new one, but keeps it from becoming a "spare" unit.

I'd go with option 2 because it's less devices to maintain (power, network, widgets moving, etc.)

For any given library size, fewer servers is always the better choice performance-wise. We recommend that the maximum number of servers in a system be limited to 4 (and that includes player/servers like Strato and Alto). So while either option above is fine, option 2, by virtue of having 2 servers rather than 3 is the preferred choice.

In addition, the maximum number of guaranteed concurrent playbacks on a Compact Terra is only 5 whereas that number is 10 for a full-sized Terra. Of course, this only matters if your installation has more than 5 playback zones to begin with.

More detail is available in our KB article here.
