Dealer recommendations in the Detroit area

MXT

Well-known member
Hi all, I'm looking for AV dealer recommendations in southeast Michigan who carry any/all of the following: Kaleidescape (naturally), Anthem, B&W, Control4, JL Audio, JVC, Lumagen, Parasound.

Context: I'm building a new home theater room sometime this year (hopefully), and I'll be reusing some equipment, buying some new equipment, and I'll definitely want help with design, installation, and calibration.

I could do some Google searches (and I have), but first-hand recommendations from forum members here would carry a lot of weight. :) Thanks!

I'll send a recommendation later today, I need to confirm if the business I'd recommend carries all of those lines. I know they offer Kaleidescape, JVC, and Lumagen, need to confirm the others. I'll PM you later today, tomorrow at latest.

Thank you very much, Jim, for your offer to help, much appreciated. :)

Let me provide a little more background information.

I do have a longstanding relationship with a dealer in another state (where I lived for 20+ years), and they are happy to drop ship to me here in MI. What I really need local help with is the onsite aspects of building a new theater that I don't really want to manage myself. For example, installing in-wall/in-ceiling speakers, room treatments (e.g. bass traps), automation programming, etc. If there is a trusted local company that doesn't mind installing equipment purchased from someone else, then I would be happy to hire them for such work. I just felt it would be more polite if I also purchased some equipment locally as well, if possible. :)

All understood, and makes sense. I meant what I said about helping without expecting a sale, I fortunately don't need the money. As you probably know, it can be difficult to get businesses to support only the installation, but not impossible. I'm still waiting to hear back from another friend to see if his folks have the time to run an install. I'll check the schedule with my guys, but I think they're obligated 30 months out. If there's a break in there I'll let you know.

What is your timeframe?

Late 2024 best case scenario, but early/mid 2025 is more realistic. I'm just planning ahead, so I can involve interested parties well before construction begins. But maybe even a year is too short of notice. :)

Got it, I'll pass that along, it might help. My guys are currently scheduling June 2026, so they're out. I'll get back to you, but perhaps someone else here on the forum knows someone as well.

Jim

Take a look at SoundCheck in Pontiac and Paulson's in Farmington Hills. We are also just starting our own theater build, and while we decided to do the set-up ourselves. we were really impressed with the people we met at these companies and think either would do a great job.

Paulson's carries most of the brands you are looking for. This link shows a listing of all their brands.

SoundCheck also has a great showroom, but you need to schedule an appointment. We went there primarily to audition speakers and learned about their installation services.

Both are cool places and definitely worth a visit. Let me know if you find any others!

Just a remark from a cinema builder perspective:
We would pass a request where the equipment is already set, but the client still wants design and planning services.
This is wrong order. You first do the design (room design, acoustical / visual design, etc.) and planning and then you select the equipment.
Just my 2 cents. We´re located in Germany, so we definitely don´t have any stake in here. :)

The business I was considering isn't interested, they're scheduled 14 months out and currently doing the planning on several projects. Agree with the comments above, room design first, then equipment based on owner's stated audio/video expectations. Obviously all within a stated budget.

Last weekend I did in fact stop by Paulson's. They seemed very thoughtful and willing to engage on my project.

I don't think the equipment I plan to keep is too detrimental to a clean build. For example, sources like my Blu-ray player and Strato S, and a very nice amp. It would be difficult for me to get rid of equipment that is easily repurposed, just so I could start from scratch. Not on my budget anyway. :)
