Premium VOD vs Rental vs New Release Logic

Hello,

Apologies if this question has already been asked or parts of it among older posts. I tried searching first.

Is it documented anywhere when a new title will be available for sale vs rental vs premium vod?

My assumption is studios play a role in the logic + k’s content team needing to do some work. But currently the timeline plus gaps have left me baffled.

Some examples:
I preordered new Spider-Man but no release date of when it will even download.
Want to rent the new Bond movie before purchasing, but not available to rent. Same goes for new Ghostbusters.
Sing 2 came out yesterday and was able to do a premium VOD (or premium rental if that’s the right term).

I’m sure there is a logic to this, I just don’t understand it. When I see the iTunes Store with content for rent or purchase before K, I was surprised considering K is supposed to be the premium service.

I can give a little historic insight but that’s the best I can do:

  • Digital releases have all been occurring simultaneously. This is based on monitoring Vudu, iTunes and Kaleidescape. For “Spider-man: No Way Home“ this is scheduled for 1 March 2022.
  • Rentals are a little less obvious from what I have been tracking:
    • MGM is missing a lot of rentals. Currently, there are only four titles that have rental options. In addition, the Bond movies have a third party to deal with in acquiring rights - EON Productions. So far NONE of the Bond films have rental options yet. Bottom line on MGM titles is to be careful what you assume on rental options.
    • Other major studios seem to have most of their catalog available for rentals (other than new releases). For new releases, I haven’t been able to discern a pattern of when rentals show up.
    • I haven’t really kept track of Premium Rentals to be able to tell if there is a pattern of when these are offered and by which studios.
That’s all I have been able to glean from tracking monthly releases along with other information I follow. I would like to see updated information on rentals but for now I am just really glad to have them!!

John

Rentals for new releases (standard, non-premium rentals) almost always show up the same day that the physical disc comes out. Both for Kaleidescape and other digital retailers. For example, iTunes lists Ghostbusters: Afterlife as available for rental on Feb. 1st, which is the same date as the street date on the disc, and I would expect it to be available for rental on KScape the same date.
