Home Router Recomendations

I still love my Unifi equipment. I chose to go with "separates" rather than the dream machines, giving me more flexibility when upgraded components are released. (Kinda like choosing separate audio controller + amp rather than a unified "integrated amp" or receiver.)

I have the UXG-Pro NextGen Gateway, the CloudKey Gen2, and the USW-Pro 24 PoE. Then 7 different APs (mostly Flex-HD, but one of the new U6-Lite), and 7 different switches in various locations. All has been very reliable and easy to monitor and configure.

Going with separates rather than a UDM took a little more effort in setup, but already has paid off as it let me upgrade the gateway when the UXG-Pro came out. It also means that if something fails, it's super easy to replace that one thing (switch, AP, gateway, cloud controller) without bringing down the whole network. If a UDM fails, your entire network and security camera system is down, potentially for days until you get and configure a complete replacement.

So, if you go with UDM Pro, and I do get the appeal for simplicity, and if you can't handle downtime at all, then you should actually keep a spare UDM (maybe a non-pro) handy for a quick swap if necessary.
