Lumagen Radiance Pro Video Processors

I had one of the very early 2U Pro's as part of the beta-tester program before the existence of the Pro was publicly known. It didn't like playing with my Krell Foundation processor as the Krell saw "silence" from the Pro with DTSHD-MA audio sound tracks. The Kaleidescape player had to be set to output LPCM but the M-class players can only do that in 5.1. And with changes in video resolution from the player (going from the top menu to playing a movie) the re-sync for the video to appear took about 30 seconds, and it was a gamble whether you'd get a picture at all. And if by bad luck the picture didn't appear I'd have to open the back of the server rack and start pulling out connectors and do whatever other black magic to get it working again. In the end it wasn't worth the effort, particularly when I bought a projector that had its own calibration software. My experience with Lumagen Support was outstanding, as others here have also mentioned. And Jim is right, I am half blind. Once the JVC auto-cal had done its thing I didn't feel the need to tweak that any further with a video processor.
If I had a native 4K projector and Lumagen built a slimmed down Pro version with 2 inputs and single output + audio it would be a better hardware fit for my needs.

This is a helpful thread - thank you. It seems clear that for a laser projector, the Lumagen is really a worthwhile investment. I am unfortunately limited to a projector which fits in a Future Automation PD2.5 so I don’t believe there is a laser projector which can fit. Given this, I have been looking at a Sony VPL-VW570ES (with a 100” screen). Does a Lumagen make sense at this level of projector or only with more expensive/larger/laser projectors?

Thanks!

Works well with that projector, I have quite a few clients with that model that use it for the tone mapping and aspect support.

Thank you! It sounds like it is helpful even without a top end projector then. Thank you

I’ve been a lurker here for about a year but now that I’m actively jumping into Kaleidescape I will participate more. I upgraded my theater last year and went through Kris Deering for several components including the Lumagen Pro and Panamorph DCR and several audio components. THE new JVC RS3000 was shipped directly to him from JVC for calibration and he used his Lumagen Pro for that setup and sent the programming file to Jim to load to the new Lumagen before shipping it to me. Kris has the same Stewart Studiotek 130 G4 screen and could mask it to a 130” diagonal to match my setup for his calibrations. So he was basically calibrating my stuff in his lab. Almost as good as him being in Raleigh NC. All of this arrived at my house and other than me installing PJ, adjusting the DCR and doing pixel focus fine tuning it was ready to go. Kris really is the best at his craft and is very good to work with. I could not recommend him more highly. Now I’m working with him to jump into the KScape ecosystem.

I’ve been a Lumagen owner for over 23 years and regardless of recent improvements in JVC tone mapping I’m fully convinced my experience is better with the Lumagen than without. Tone mapping is perfect and interface with auto aspect ratio is slicker than just using JVC. They don’t come any better than Jim Peterson. I had heard of Kris on forums but Jim is who actually made the introduction.

I did exactly the same process and purchases with Kris that you described, though I bought a NX7/(RS2000). It all works together seamlessly and looks great. I had bought a Strato S 12TB through Kris, but changed that out for a Strato C plus Terra 48 that I purchased from Jim @cinelife.

I hope you enjoy your setup, its a good one!

I have a Premiere system with a lot of SD DVDs and a Radiance Pro 5348 with Costar. I haven’t been fully satisfied with the SD processing of both the Kaleidescape player and the Radiance Pro. I spent some time yesterday and experimented with my setup. I settled on the following,

Strato—C on Lumagen Radiance Pro 5348 input 2
Lumagen Radiance 2144 on Lumagen Radiance Pro 5348 input 8 (Costar input)
M700 on Lumagen Radiance 2144 input 1

M700 set to passthrough video
Lumagen Radiance 2144 set to upscale to 1080p

There are several advantages to this configuration,
- You can chose between Gennum VXP (Auto/Video) and FPGA(Film Mode) de-interlacing.
- Gennum VXP offer digital video noise reduction with mosquito and block noise reduction.
- Split the scaling work. 480(6x)to 1080on 2144 then 1080(4x)to 2160on 5348 vs. 480(24x) to 2160 on 5348 alone.

Q.Q

I have the latest KScape kit :) and a Barco Freya+ arriving soon :)

Any benefit do you think to adding a Lumagen ?

KScape pretty much the only source in the cinema.

Chris

Only dis advantage is to your pocket book.

Your spending a 90K and not including a Lumagen ................... naughty boy.

Does anyone know if there's a Lumagen distributor in Los Angeles? I'd love to do an in person evaluation of a 1080p to 4k upscale via Lumagen and see the quality (and if it's with a KScape system, even better!)

Thanks,

Mike
