NEWS: Warner Bros Hybrid 2021 Distribution Model

I would like to see K benefit from this, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

It sounds like movies will be in theaters and HBO Max on release date, but they will be removed from HBO Max after one month and be exclusively in theaters for a window of time.

HBO Max subscriber numbers have not met AT&T’s expectations. I see this as an attempt to boost their numbers while still giving some exclusivity to theaters.

We are in a very interesting time for film distribution. Every studio is experimenting with different models that they would have never considered less than a year ago.

I'm pretty confident all these movies will hit Kaleidescape a month later or whatnot.

This really does not bode well for Kscape given the choice of streaming Warner brothers movies day and date included with paid subscription and no per movie fee vs waiting 30 days and paying for the movie.

Perhaps Kscape will have a rental window day and date.

Movie ownership is already a dying market and this is going to reduce it even faster. People want to just pay a subscription fee and watch whatever they want. They don't want to pay and own individual movies.

Just look at music. When was the last time you bought an individual album? I probably haven't bought an album in over a decade. I just pay for Spotify.

As much as I hate to see the 4K Blu-ray market and movie ownership dwindle, I just don't see it as sustainable. Believe me, I really wish it wasn't going that way. I have over 1,000 digital movies and don't even want to know how many physical movies and would prefer to do that indefinitely.

What do people think is the future here for K? What is K's path forward to be sustainable? #1 they must get rental capability out ASAP. Do you offer a subscription service? Or is the niche market of owners, collectors, and videophiles enough? I want to see K around for a long time, so I hope they're thinking about these things, as I'm sure they are.

It's a niche market for sure. Lots of folks couldn't care less or identify the difference in streaming vs Kscape.

But, consider high end 2-ch audio. There are several manufactures who are still creating new equipment (speakers, pre-amps, amps, digital players, DACs, etc). That's never going to be a mass market. But there's clearly enough market share to keep several companies in business.

I think between K's current system, its continued expansion of accessible media, and the fact that studios will probably stop making discs in the nearer future, K is in a fabulous position.

Of course, that's just my opinion. I'm not an "insider" in this industry, so I don't have any additional infomration upon which to base my opinion.

I'd expect most studios to do something like that. Looks like Disney did already. It's a hook for new business. They'll offer initally exclusive material to subscribers only. But I doubt the majority of people want to pay a reoccurring monthly subscription to several different studios/sources.

I'm fine waiting 30 days. We had to put up with the same thing for a while when studios started selling movies (blu-ray) for 30 days before you could rent them. Now in some cases, they are restricting on-demand rentals, trying to force subscriptions or purchases. If K can secure rentals for movies when the only other way to watch is a subscription to a specific streaming provider or purchase, they'll be in a pretty unique position. More so if they can offer a discount or pro-rated price on purchasing movies you already rented. :)

Which makes me think... most providers currently allow you access to a rented streaming movie for ~24 hours after you start watching it. Is that a studio limit, or something the streaming companies enforce? Assuming K wants owners to buy/keep the rental they downloaded, there could be a similar limit of time for a discount on a rented movie. For example, if K lets you apply the cost of the rental toward the purchase, you might have 24 hours to apply that cost. After that, your K system would delete the movie and you'd start over.

30 days after theatrical release to just buy a movie and own it digitally would be fantastic.

Forget PVOD IMO at higher prices unless that PVOD rental price is also effectively a purchase too. I'll just wait. There's very little I need to see that badly. These are just movies. Especially if I'm only waiting a month or whatever.
