Constant Terra Server Activity ?

About 10 days ago I added a 40 TB Terra server to my setup. While everything is running fine, I hear CONSTANT hard drive activity, even though I am not downloading any movies and when I am not playing any content.

I get that it may download new meta-data updates and such every once in a while, but this seems sustained and constant. There can't be more than 12 movies on it, so it's impossible that it is taking more than a week to index them or something…

Would anyone have an idea about this ?

Thanks !

Mike

Hey folks,

We did a bit of digging, and discovered that a bug has crept into the Terra that is preventing the disks from spinning down when it is idle. A fix for this issue is planned for an upcoming software release. I've been corresponding with Mike (fizzsnob) via PM to see if what he was experiencing with the "thrashing" is some kind of additional issue, but for the rest of you who have a Terra, hopefully this fix will make things a bit quieter when your system is not in use.
@MikeKobb can you comment?

I find my Terra really never shuts off. It operates always on by design I believe. Though not sure about HD sleep/parking when no disc access is happening.

I wish it had some type of sleep mode. I know most people likely don't care, but it seems it could be a bit more green.... Does it really need to run 24x7? SJ

When I received my first one I actually opened a support ticket because, like you, I thought something crazy was going on with the disks all the time... I'd also assumed that the unit would be near silent. In the end support/I determined that is just it behaving normally. I've since moved it out of my viewing room so it doesn't disturb me. Funnily enough the loudest thing remaining in my main room is the Strato. From memory I think my M500 too always seems to be "on" but that's more a heat thing than a noise thing.

Hey Mike, when you say that the disks are accessing constantly, is it a sort of continual, low-level seek every few seconds, or something more intensive than that? I recently moved my Terra into my home office while I was doing some rack re-org. It had been off for a few days, and when I turned it on, it spent quite awhile at a very high level of disk activity, really hammering away, then settled down to a quiet state where it was still reading or writing a few times per minute, but not just constantly seeking. I think the period of high activity I experienced was probably a movie guide update, plus the re-sync with my Strato.

If yours is seeking at a high rate constantly, it might be worth having somebody take a look at your system logs to see if something unusual is going on. If you PM me your Terra serial number, we can do that.

I'm not sure what the continual low-level activity is, but I'll ask.

It has largely sounded like constant periods of high activity, for well over 10 days.

Add like you have observed, it seems to be constantly doing something… I can't say that I have observed a time when I didn't hear some sort of hard drive activity coming from the unit.

I will PM you my Serial number… Thanks!

Mike

How loud IS the Strato?

Cool! Always good when things get fixed no matter how they bubble to the surface. Great work as ever @MikeKobb and team

@steelman1991 mine definitely isn’t silent but that said I only hear it if I sit in the room with literally nothing else on. Room is sound proofed too. So I’m probably being on the other side of normal to say its “loud”, just purely in the context of nothing else 🤓
