Movie Trailers and the lack of them

It's definitely a balance. The trailers we have today, even with the vetting that we do, are not representative of the full quality of the movie, and we think people understand that. But at the same time, we don't want to deliver something in "potato-vision" 240p, or that touts how wonderful the "New for 2003" DVD box set is, and there are definitely trailers that are in that sort of ballpark. I expect Ron Popeil to jump out at any moment on some of them.

I'm not sure why some popular movies don't have better trailers, to be honest. I do know that we're working to get better coverage, though.

I appreciate the feedback!

I don't need older trailers with bad quality that doesn't match what this is capable of, but for newer material it would be nice if trailers were an option. Would love to start a movie and get a few random trailers from something associated with the movie starting (ex: Same studio, family, action genre etc). I know some people likely just want to start the movie instantly, but for some of us trailers are part of the movie going show-off experience when having guests over. Could even have the lighting go down in phases with the trailers and then completely down to normal movie settings when the feature starts.

I've been looking at a lot of new releases lately, and all have had trailers. Maybe this is more of an issue for some older titles?

You may already now this, but in case you are not aware, you can create a custom script on your K system for movie night and insert several trailers of your choosing (from those available in your K library) to appear prior to the main feature. You can also add command cues for lighting and anything else your control system is set up to do (shades, masking, etc.).

I am very much a newbie in terms of ownership having had installation completed on Thursday!

I think it’s implied from above posts but should I assume the trailer doesn’t usually reflect the quality of the actual movie (picture and audio
? There are a number of older movies that show as uhd/hdr from the 80’s and earlier that we have discounted (so far) because the image/audio quality of the trailer doesn’t look great on the trailer (early days for us as I say) and so we have moved onto others. Hardly unique I am sure but the image quality can ruin the whole experience (projector). TBH the audio quality makes a massive difference to how it feels but the image is a make or break for us and having to buy or even rent the movie to find out isn’t great.

Noticing the ‘K scenes’ on each movie I was hoping they offered snippets (maybe part of a scene) but they don’t work in the store, just after the download. Anything, even some images would help or is there some other source I can go to? Anything would do.

I have noticed quite a few titles that don’t have trailers, particularly the music ones but we are still finding our way around.

Thanks.

What I'd really like to have there is the ATMOS Amaze demo...

That’s pretty cool. I will look up how to do that.

You are correct. The trailers are rarely (I doubt ever) as good as the quality of the local files on your K system. You can typically be assured that the picture and audio are as good (and often times better) to what you get from the equivalent disc version. Some older titles look and sound remarkable (e.g., Lawrence of Arabia, Bridge over the River Kwai).

Andy is 100% correct (as usual) but let me just expand upon what he's written a little bit. In the case of movies that you have not purchased and downloaded, any trailers that you may play are being streamed to the player (or the mobile app) from a third-party service. The quality of these trailers is never equal to what you will get with the purchased movie.

If you purchase and download a movie, the HD version will sometimes include a trailer as part of the package. Those trailers are often very good quality (it depends on what the studio elected to provide). We don't currently include trailers or other extras with the 4K download of a movie, for reasons that are complicated and beyond the scope of this post. If extras are available, you currently need to download the HD version of the movie (which is included with the 4K purchase) to get them.

Since we don't download the HD version by default when you buy the 4K version (unless you have an HD-only player/zone), we made a change in a recent kOS software release where the movie's details page will show you if there are extras available to download. That makes it a bit easier to manage, but we would still prefer all of this to be transparent to the user, and improvements in this area are on our roadmap.

Forgive the crummy photos, but the new feature looks like this. Note that there is a Play Trailer option visible in this photo. This is the streamed trailer, since I have not downloaded the HD version of the film.

Somewhat off topic but it would be nice if we could download only the extras. I need a second Terra 72TB if I want the extras for all my 4K movies.

Do you mean that you don't want the movie on your system at all, or you just don't want the HD version of the movie (to get the extras)? I assume the latter. Unfortunately, it's complicated, but it may become possible in the future.

Yes it would be nice to have extras from the HD and SD versions without the actual films themselves. Those HD downloads aren’t much smaller than the 4K downloads. I would need a second Terra 72TB if I wanted the extras for every 4K movie I have :)

I just became a new K owner last week and am very happy with the system so far. I host movie nights every Wednesday night (for the last 12 years) using mostly an Apple TV, so the availability of trailers is very important to us since it helps us decide what to watch before we eat dinner and roll the movie. I did notice that many movies that have trailers on the K app do not have trailers on the player interface itself. However, I will say that the audio on the trailers available on the K player is way superior to the Apple TV trailer audio which now sounds very flat. So what we do to get around this limitation is AirPlay via Apple TV the K app screen which gives us a larger variety of trailers before we pick a movie. Note that many of my movie night guests work in the film and music business, and they definitely appreciate the improved audio and video from using the K system vs compressed movies streamed on the Apple TV.

Hello AlphaG,

It's true that not all movies have trailers available. Many of our trailers come from a third-party service, and we have a vetting process to ensure that they meet a minimum quality standard, since many of our customers will be watching them on a large screen. So sometimes that means we end up having to reject the trailer for a movie to avoid a poor experience. Sometimes a movie that lacks a trailer on your player will have a trailer available in the mobile application, since the smaller mobile screens are not as revealing of quality problems.
I sure can't speak for anyone else, but I came from running Plex into my ripped files and >99% of those movies had trailers. I have a projector and a large screen and I NEVER thought the trailer's video quality subtracted from anything. If Plex (which is close to free) can provide Trailers for all movies, certainly a "premier" and very expensive poduct like Kaleidescape should be able to offer the same.
